22r carburetor issue -need lil help

Whats up everyone im new on this forum and i have a 89 pickup 2wd with a 22r in it. I bought it friday and it ran great all weekend till today. it starts and stalls. It runs on brake clean so that made me go towards the fuel pump. i pulled the hose to the carb off and cranked the engine over and the fuel pump is getting fuel to the carb. and the carb is getting fuel out to the intake too. truck has 160k miles. do you guys think i should just rebuild the carb or know of anything else i should check. i have a feeling something to do with the idle in the carb has gone bad.

If you are getting fuel then I would be looking at something electrical, cap, plugs, rotor, coil.....

The fuel level in the float chamber should be in the middle of the sight glass on the side of the carb. If it's not, either too high or too low, there's a chance the float is saturated or sticking or the needle is not (un)seating properly causing you to run lean or flood out. If the truck sat for a while, anything's possible. There could've been some sediment in the float chamber that came loose and is now clogging a jet, the linkage could be sticking, etc.
I'd check the fuel filter as well as look for vacuum leaks before diving at the carb though. If nothing else appears wrong, you might be able to dissasemble and clean the carb but if you're that far into it a rebuild would probably be a good investment just so you know things are good and reduce your chances of having to tear it apart again.

yea sure enough the float is empty. I guess either way im gonna replace the fuel filter and hope that its just clogged and that the jets arent clogged. I'll probaby end up having to tear it apart cause of crap over the years in the fuel.

Before you go too far, the float being empty 'obviously' could be an issue with the float and/or needle valve. But it could also be an issue with the fuel pump.
So maybe disconnect the fuel line from the carburetor and have someone crank the engine while you put your thumb over the fuel line from the pump and see if it can squirt fuel out between your finger and the pipe.

Make sense?

It's not that you want to bury your finger in the end of the pipe but maybe just enough to hold back 3-5 PSI pressure.

i already checked the pump. i went there first cause of the car running fine on brake clean. the pump is getting the fuel to the carb fine. its been so long since ive messed with carbs. Now is the needle valve easy to access on the carb.

pull the top off the carb and be careful. there is a gasket around the horn, float bowl and such. if it tears be prepared to replace it. (which is why I said if you're going to tear it apart you might as well rebuild it.)

and if the pump was getting fuel to the carb 'fine' the float should be filled properly, no?

well i pulled out all the jets and carb cleaned everything and now it starts and runs with me giving it gas which is more than it used to do so i turned the idle up a lil and i got it to run without giving it gas but runs very poorly. thinkin i should just rebuild carb replace fuel filter and call it a day
