Thanks;

I have done a lot of cars in 35 years. I think the 3slo just runs hot due to that truely awful exhaust design. Perhaps it saved stocking two different exhaust systems for one truck. Rather than one exhaust design per engine. I have an 88 3slo harness thats just fine, but my 91 harness has a cracked injector plug and insulation. A drop of bathtub silicone and all is well. The only dead ones are because I am still adapting the 88 chassis harness to the 91 engine harness.

Some hush matt under the carpet will cool things off for your feet. You see it a lot on resto-mod muscle cars.

Yes; Runs the fuel pump and CSI. Once the engine starts the AFM holds the relay to keep the fuel pump running.

I've changed the ignition switch. My starter relay stuck one time, andi thought it was the ignition. Well plugged the new one in and the starter kept spinning. Replaced relay and all was good.

Your a big help sky, appreciate it. I'll be sure to keep yall posted when its fixed

Going to attempt some simple tests today thinking maybe I missed something stupid... the thing that makes me crazy is this motor has less than 12K miles on it. I should have just left it in the 88 where it was running great... Had I read some problems with the 4runners before hand, I may have thought twice about moving it.

Sky, you said you were putting an 88 in a 91, what are some of the obstacles you know are not going to work together when you do this?

I have two '88 4runners. They use a different injector / ECU than any other model year.
My black '88 has a 1991 4runner 3vze automatic trans engine in it. The vehicle and engine are not electrically compatible.

What I did was hot wire the '91 computer using the engine harness and patched from the '88 chassis harness electical and signal wires into the '91 engine harness. Looks like a hack job but it works. Three battery wires, fuel pump, O2, temp, and tach.

Or you can take the wiring, injectors, ECU from the old engine and swap it to the '88 and it should run just fine. I did not have that luxury, mine came sans engine.

You engine is fine, nothing wrong with it. Use the '88 wiring, ECU, and accesories. Please do not make things harder by hacking up the harnesses, just make a few jumpers from one to the other. I think you need maybe three wires to get it started and some more for signals & fuel. The '88 ECU is much simpler than the '91 and up.

4runners have no more problems than any other model, just the '88 model year had some quirks.

If you do decide to swap out the '88 stuff, I could use the injectors. I am building up the parts to back date my rig.

Hey Sky,

This is what happened. I had this awesome little 4x4 88 pickup that I had bought a new motor from CT and had it installed by a professional. The truck was great!! However, I moved to Florida and this truck had no AC and with kids it was lacking in the space I needed... Found a mint 92 4runner that the motor had been pulled by the guy who owned it (a mechanic) and didnt have the time to fix. So a couple kids who love this kind of thing, came over to help with the motor swap. I really should have researched before as they although knew a lot, did not know enough. So they helped put the 88 motor in the 92, we spliced the injector plugs and other plugs from the wiring harness so they would fit the 88... and it started right up... ran for 29 miles and now it starts and dies. Once I researched a little bit I realized that the injectors and the ECU were not compatible and had to start figuring out what from the 88 now needed to go back to the 92 plugs and sensors etc... so we changed out the injectors to 92 and the plugs, changed the fuel pump (the other one was bad from sitting) changed the circuit relay, double checked the MAF and it is fine, changed the wires and distributor to 92. took off the gas tank at one point and had it cleaned etc... changed the fuel pressure regulator, and there is probably more.. but trying to remember this am without coffee...

What I am not sure of are the sensors in the back of the motor. I believe the plenum on the back there is from the 88, I am not sure which the sensors are 88 and which are 92. I do have the 92 plenum but none of the sensors in that were any good, broken etc.... Could this be the cause of my problem and if so how the heck do I find a diagram etc to figure out what is back there? I asked at the local autozone and napa and they look at me like I am crazy... I know it will be a pain in the *** to get back there again, but what the heck I am will to try anything at this point.

I do have the 88 injectors, where are you located?

I'm up in NY so its quite a hike.

The sensors in the back matter later. As long as all the wires are plugged in correctly that should be fine. You need all '92 wiring and parts. Worst case is the distributor shaft being 8mm or 10mm not fitting. Is the distriutor timed right? Fuel pumps are the same. the sensors on the back are probably '92 since I doubt you changed the four of them.

Have you tried wedging a hammer handle in the VAFM to hold it open? It may be starting but the fuel pump stops running cutting off fuel.

Well after a looooong wait they finally got the wiring harness and installed it. Its running better that ever now actuall. Idle is more consistent, starts faster and better, seems run a little smother. That harness whas just too old and brttle and the heat, water, mud and maybe when i rebuilt it all got to it and it finally crapped out for good. But seems good now. It was a huge harness. Covered EVERYTHING. I didnt know that it was quite literally the whole engine harness.
