I've got a couple questions...

I've got some steel wheels on my 91 4Runner, that I actually really like - except for the rust. I have a few options, but not sure about some.

1. New wheels. (Haven't found any I like, though, short of spending 1k... suggestions?)

2. Paint the wheels. (Black.)

3. Powder coat the wheels. (More expensive than new steel.)

4. De-rustify them, polish them, then put a dozen or so coats of clear coat on. I prefer the metal look, but I don't know if this would work.

So... any ideas?

number four would look pretty cool, i dont know how long i would like em like that tho, i would get out the grinder and wire wheel and take down the rust, then if needed sand some more down, hit it with a rust prevent primer from kleanstrip, and then black rustoleum them!

i'd wirewheel em, and then paint em with a good primer, and enamel paint (like rustoleum for example).

IMHO - they'll rust under the clear coat...

I tried to do that to some 300M torsion bars (new) - clear coated em - they still rusted...

buy some 17" take off FJ Cruiser steelies on ebay or somewhere. thats what i did. 300 shipped to my door then i put some throwaway 17" Goodyear A/T's from my suburban. i think it looks good. i should have painted them first as the factory paint was faded and oxidized but oh well, another project for another time....

Yeah, I was thinking the black paint is the best and cheapest bet, but also 'hoping' for the clear coat. But it'll still be badass. Thanks!

Thats what happend to the wagon wheel steelies I got.

I only payed 120 bucks for them so there was no point really sinking any money into them.
I got all the loose rust off, along with any paint that was bubbling. scuffed everything up (mind you this is just the wheel by itself, no tire installed), shot it with duplicolour black primer (2 coats) then hit it with duplicolour flat black wheel paint ( 3 coats, coulnt find gloss black ) then hit it with duplicolour suv clearcoat (3 coats), it has the flat black look but with a little gloss to it

how much was your quote for the powdercoating? sounds like robbery, either that or my guy works real cheap.

Lacquer paint is way better and more durable if you can get it.
