I don't know about the smoke but as far as burping your system that overflow is totally normal. The way I've always done it is let it purge out as much as it needs to with that over flow and once it naturally goes down without revving it I top it off and throw the cap back on. I could be totally wrong but I've done it so far on 4 different vehicles and 3 times on my own truck and it's always done good with holding the proper temperatures afterwards.

Yea that's a better word. It's really a steam. It's almost like underneath behind the tstat area. I changed it last month, so I'm wondering if maybe some spilled and pooled up down under there somewhere and I just didn't notice it until now?

If you have drained the rad or changed the coolant recently, your rad might not be completely full or your heater core could be airlocked. My truck didn't have a decent heater for over a year after I did an engine swap and I tried everything to get rid of the airlock. I finally had to remove both hoses that fed the heater core (the 2 tubes sticking out of the firewall) and I had to use another hose and funnel to fill the heater core with antifreeze to purge the air. Once I did that the air from the heater was so hot it would drive you out of the cab and I seldom ever run it on high.
your right sorry.
