Gas gauge not working

Have recently did a holley 500 carb swap on my 87 toyota p/u 22r during the swap i switched over to a electric fuelpump (one that goes outside of the tank) a few months later the pump burnt out so i switched back to the factory mechanical fuel pump and since then my fuel gauge will not do anything i know that i have at least 1/4 tank of gas i have pulled the sending unit and tryed lifting the arm manually and still nothing i have even put a new one in it and still will not read. The gauge worked perfectlly with the electric one and worked before i switched fuel pumps and i am completly stumped any advice would help a bunch

When you are manually lifting the arm is the key on,and are you grounding it to a good ground?

Whats been previously stated and to add it maybe the sending unit. In my 87 toyota...the gauge acts funny...i put 1/4 tanks it reads full or sometimes nothing. I haven't played with it. I just keep a gas can in the back of the bed and watch my mileage
