89 4runner with 85 motor?

I have a rolled 85 4runner and am looking into putting a 89 tub on it. I live in California and I don't know if it would pass smog as an 89 with a 85 motor. Anyone know anything about this? Thanx.

Just check with the CA Dept of Motor Vehicles and see what they say.
That would be the most reliable source of information, don't you think

You can swap the motors no problem. However, just swap the long block. Reuse all the wiring, injectors, sensors, intake, and anything else from YOUR truck on the NEW motor. Just swap the long blocks ONLY. It is completely legal as long as its a like type engine, and toyota used the same 22RE long block from 85-95.

DO NOT Try to swap the entire assy with wiring and sensors over. IT WILL NOT WORK CORRECTLY!

There is a lot of little things that changed through the years but essentially the motor is the same, just use the old emissions stuff, computers, etc. and you should be fine

"Long block" is a generic term which refers to the engine block and cylinder head assembly. You're probably thinking "tall deck" or similar.

Anyhow... with regards to putting an 89 body on an 85 frame, my advice is to contact the DMV and ask what's necessary as they will have to be involved in re-assigning the VIN numbers since the 85 VIN would no longer be on its chassis.

hmm, I didn't get that he was swapping bodies.

In that case, just scrub off the old VIN's and call it good
