New Suspension Ideas

have a 85 runner with 5 inch skyjacker springs and hydro shocks. The problem is the rear flex or lack there of. I'm looking for ideas to change the rear or entire set up with a tight budget (under 800 dollars) in mind. I have cross over steering and runn 35 inch MTR's and would like to stay with that w/ minimal fender trimming. The front flexes well but eats my fenders and the rear is just about worthless. Ant ideas and help are apreciated. Thanks

BJ

WTF are you smoking..?
4runners didnt get sway bars in the rear until 90 when they got coiled.

OP..Are your shocks the right length..? If they're not long enough they could be limiting flex.
Do you normally wheel with the top off?
Could just be the fact there isnt much weight back there..
Also as far as I know skyjackers arent known for performance.

Common flexy springs for the rears are Chevy 63"s
Search the forum for that.
Or hit up allpro, marlin, or downey as I believe they all have good flexy springs.

For the front make some longer bumpstops to limit the up travel just before the tire hits the body.
Or do some cutting.

x2 on the longer Chevy springs.

I have the Downeys and they are good but I too would like move flex out of the rear.

Hammer both of your front pinch welds flat. Right behind the tire at the bottom.

I think you can get something pretty good for the rear in your price range.
Let us know what you get and how you like it.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. M shocks are the ones that came with the kit. Are any of the options you guys listed bolt on? I cant weld and the closest place for me to take it is 3 hours away. Im going to get new bilstein shocks that are a bit longer. i tried to go with longer shocks by themselves and they were way to long.

With Alcan, you can request stock length springs and then they should be bolt-on. Stock length springs won't flex quite as well as a longer spring, but the installation is easier.

Yes. The front 1st gen 4runners have an anti-sway bar...not the rear. 1st gens are basically Trucks with back seats and removable top. Suspension is exactly the same. Trucks don't have rear anti-sway bars.
