read in a thread earlier that there was a difference in the block height...?

The EFI computers are not compatible between pre 85 and post 85. The early EFI does not have a knock sensor and has a different TPS. I believe the early EFI was found in 83/84 celicas and 84 2wd pickups. These are the different 22re EFI generations: 83-84, 85-86, 87, 88-89, 90+

The 22RE wasn't available in Toy trucks until the 85 model year, and then only in 4Runners. There is a difference in block height between 84 and older 22R's and 85+ 22R's/22RE's. Heads are not interchangeable for starters. Check LCE's website for more info.
The earlier 22RE's (Celica) were much different as stated before.

Yeah, thats interesting as I have a FSM (Toyota Truck Gasoline 1984 Repair Manual) that has a fuel injection section in it. I was surprised as I was under the same impression as you and actually only bought the thing for the SFA info. Perhaps EFI was available elsewhere in the world and Toyota only wanted to print one manual per language. Anyway, it was a nice surprise for me.

In 1984, EFI was only available in 2wd pickups with an SR5 package.
