Question 2 Q. Where is the transmission fluid dip stick? can i use low range in 2 wheel drive?

Thought i'd kill 2 birds with one stone. Im going to go up camping and do some easy wheeling this weekend and i want to check the transmission fluid but i cant find the dip stick? Its an 85 sr5 5 speed 22re

- My other question is ill be going up some steep inclines and will be needing some low end torque but thats where the problem arises. I have a 4.11 in the rear and a 5.29 up front and im not getting that fixed til next week(im only going to use 2wd). So i was wondering if it is possible for me to put the transfer case in 4low and just not lock out the hubs up front, but still get the torque i need in the rear. i want to know if this is okay to do or if it will hurt any drivetrain parts or the transfer case at all??

Thanks for the help in advance everybody has been awesome here!!

No dipstick on the 5 speeds, check the filler plug on the tranny.

I don't want to comment on the hubs part since i am not 100% positive on my answer.

One the 3vze tranny its on the driver side of the transmission, iirc.

its in the owners manual if you have one

BBHHHAAAAHAHAHA!!! tranny dipstick on a 5 spd...i've had my laugh for tonight...LOL!!!...as for the 4wd part..yes you can use 4lo in 2wd...but dont lock in the hubs..as that would be BAD news...so just leave the hubs unlocked and pop it in 4lo..

Haha im glad i made u laugh , i was thinkin it might be a stupid question but i had to ask lol. As u might be able to tell this is my first stick, im only 16 lol. But thats good to hear bout the 4low. So what would be the method to check the tranny fluid then?

-And could anybody give me some tips on how to wheel with a 5 speed and using 4 low, like technique wise? i dont really want to burn the clutch out or screw up the tranny...

- OKay so this might be another stupid question, but is there any fluid in the transfer case that i should check on also?

alright cool and when i pull that bolt off is fluid goanna come pouring out, and if not what should i fill it up with til it reaches the plug?

- and dont worry no popping the clutch im just wondering if keeping it in 4low with first gear will keep me going slow enough to to get over big obstacles like 1-3 mph?

It could come pouring out. You are supposed to fill the tranny till the fluid just starts pouring out so it could still drain a bit. Just break the bolt loose with a wrench and then slowly turn it by hand after you've got it out a few turns. If it is topped of correctly you should start to see oil just starting to sweat out from the threads when you've got the bolt nearly out.

Thanks that sounds easy enough and just wondering if keeping it in 4low with first gear will keep me going slow enough to to get over big obstacles like 1-3 miles per hour without clutching?

i think the drain plug should be something like this, just try and picture it

.....
bolt> filller thing
..... feel here
: :
: :
if you stick your pinkie in there, where the bolt came out of course, and can feel oil at the very top of that resivouir, your good to go.

And in first gear in lo youll be good, youll know when your going to fast around 10mph cause your motor will be screaming

In 2-low you will be able to lift up on the clutch and you will start moving on your own. You can idle along without giving it gas, like an auto car.

Fill plug is near the reverse light switch on the W56 tranny, which is the thing with the wires coming out of the side:

And yes, hubs unlocked = 2WD no matter what the transfer case is in, so 4L = 2L. I use it all the time.

Do you have manual locking hubs? I ask because the 1985 4x4 SR5 XtraCabs came standard with automatic locking hubs.
