major problem with new part

hey i been havein speratic engine problems dieing and suddenly cutting in and out on the freeway tried a few differant things someone told me to replace the ignition pick-up assembly that goes from my ignition connects to 2 wires that run into my distributor so i replaced it and tryed drivein it and it wouldnt start at the gas station and barley made it home without dieing ...did i do somethin wrong or could it be a bad part ..please help its my wife daily driver ....1980 toyota 4x4 20r

check battery connections. could be bouncing on and off the battery terminals as your bouncing down the road.

are you talking about the coil or igniter?

Ok, so you replaced the pick up coil in the distributor, did you set the air gap properly ?.

Check your fuel system out. There is an intank filter and a filter on the frame by the fuel tank that could be plugging as well.

air gap ?shoot i dunno i thought it was a no brainer .it just has 2 screws not slotted i didnt think there was much adjustment to it .i put thr old one bcack in .is the air gap between the new ignition deal i put in there and the metal part of the rotor ?(where the rotor has those little blades on it that hits the metal peice of the ignition pick up)because i noticed the new pick up i put in there looked like it had a bigger gap.how would you set that?

Fuel filter on an '80 should be on the p/s inner fender well

On your 20r engine it may be preset, another words remove and replace and your good to go. I put a pick up coil on a 86-87 22RE and you have to set the gap.
