1st gen transfer cases

I have 3 1st gen transfer cases
2 have sideplates approx.3" x 4" on the l.h.s
1 transfer does not
i'm just wondering if these cases with the side plates were made for a P.T.O outlet or are these a different style of case ie;chaindrive

Top Shift
Short Style Case
Short Low Range Shift Rod

27 Spline Outputs
