Back to OEM radio/cassette in '88 SR5 4x4
When I bought my 1988 SR5 4x4 used, it had a Panasonic radio that I never liked, not very expertly installed. Now I have a genuine 'Yota radio from a 1992 Corolla to replace it.
This 'Yota radio has brackets with 'ears' on the sides. Unfortunately I can see nothing in the space of the dash to attach the brackets to. Am I missing something obvious, or were the attachment points removed when the Panasonic was installed?
Can someone advise me here, or steer me to something helpful online?

Radio hardware donor possibilities
A previous owner of my 1988 SR5 4x4 pickup gutted the radio part of the dash and put in an aftermarket radio I never liked much and is now kaput. I have acquired a genuine Toyota radio from a 1992 Corolla and have it hooked up electrically, but not yet mechanically for lack of mounting plates and adaptors.
There aren't many 4x4 (or even 4x2) pickups or 4Runners of this vintage in the self-service junkyards I frequent. I'm wondering if any other 'Yota models used the same internal mounting hardware and could be recruited as donor cars?

if there are metal brackets mounting the panasonic in place, you will need to remove them and attatch them to the new yota radio. It should be held in with 4 screws, two on either side of the radio. If you do not have the brackets, you will need to get some. you may get lucky enough to find some at the dealership for a good deal, if not post up here in the wanted section and you may have luck finding a set.

Yesterday I visited the Ecology self service yard in Wilmington, CA. Got what looked like the right brackets from a 1990 Camry. When I got them home, they didn't fit. After more research, I see that only brackets from an 83-89 pickup or 4Runner will work. So, I'll probably go back tomorrow and be more careful choosing the donor.
Almost got my toolbag stolen. Left it in one vehicle to look at its next door neighbor. When I turned around, someone already had his hands on it!

Yeah, 84-88 pickup and 84-89 4Runner brackets are all the same. We used to have them at stereo shops BITD because most aftermarket radios have a bunch of different holes to accomodate these and other brackets.
If you don't find what you want, maybe try a local stereo shop. Go back to the installer and tell them what's up--they might have some laying around, but it's not the most common part these days.

Bummer about the near theft. I always carry a Craftsman tool bag with a strap over my shoulder--mostly so I don't forget anything, but it's a good theft deterent too.

people are shady, everywhere. NEVER let your tools out of your sight. good thing you saw it before it happened. As stated, the only brackets that will work will be out of an 85-89 runner, or 85-88 truck. nothing else will work as far as i am aware.

here is a link to several sets for sale on ebay, some include the factory style pocket as well if needed.

Had everything in a nice over-the-shoulder bag like Mort has. Would-be thief was about to walk off with the whole works! Makes me want to get one of those GPS thingies nominally for keeping track of a toddler or pet. Or do I just need something scruffier to carry tools in?
It's all well and good to try not to let stuff out of your sight, except you need to set it down and concentrate on the surgery at hand. Apparently that's all the invitation some people need.

Here's what I found out online: The bracket part numbers are 86211-89101 and 86212-89104. They were used in trucks and 4Runners models LN5*, LN6*, RN5*, RN6*, RN7* and VZN6* built 8/83 through 2/89.
At both Pick-Your-Part lots in Wilmington, CA there were a few 4Runners with no brackets left in them. *Very* few trucks. I heard a rumor that they get bought up fast and shipped to the Middle East where they are as esteemed as Kalashnikovs.
I'm about to set off on a cross-country drive. I can try mom-and-pop junkyards along the way until I find them. I doubt the A-rabs go to all of those, but they may keep the bigger, more electronically connected 'yards picked clean.

That would be great and I'd have one less task to worry about on my long drive. I'm in Southern California. Los Angeles area. Culver City near LAX airport.
If you have a PayPal account it would be simple to reimburse you. USPS priority would have them here in 2-3 days, from anywhere in the USA.
Please verify part numbers though. 86211-89101 on one side. 86212-89104 on the other. I learned the hard way that parts that *look* about right, might not actually fit when you get down to the nitty-gritty!

FG011518 FG011517
they came out of an 89 4runner that i parted out. i also have the universal pocket for underneath if you need/want it.
typing those numbers in on this site:
http://www.toyotapartszone.com/oem/t...212-89104.html
says they will fit 84-89 runners

though the part numbers are different, i can assure you that this did indeed come out of a 1st gen 4runner and will work with the truck you are looking to use it in. I can get some pics if that would help out.

Next problem is that I'm within a day or two of embarking on a drive from L.A. to Massachusetts via Austin, Dallas, maybe Huntsville and West Virginia. Probably not enough time to ship the brackets until I reach Massachusetts in about two weeks. Are you anywhere along this route?

From West Virginia to western Massachusetts I usually take I-81 through Scranton, then I-84 into NY at Port Jarvis. I see it's about the same mileage if I stay on I-81 to Allentown and take state routes 33 and 209 north from there. It's a bit of new scenery for me, so I like the idea.
I expect to be coming through in about two weeks. How does that work for you?

There's too many variables to predict the day yet. I have several days' work in WV and can time my departure from there if it's heading into a workday for you.
How can I reach you? I'm dave underscore mason at ca rr com. Email will be spotty once I start driving but I'll have my cell along and can text to your cell or email anytime.
