After getting tired of the poor stock sound system in my 99 4runner I remembered that I still had some old equipment in the attic. I have two old school Soundstream Reference 200 amplifiers and an old Soundstream Class A 3.0 which I plan to later use as a sub amp. For now I have mounted the two amps on a custom amp rack mounted on the left side wall of the rear. I'm really happy how it has turned out.

That is a great idea, and it looks great. Alot of campers will like that because it doesnt tie up the back of thier rear seats. If my amps were not already installed under my drivers seat, I would deffinatly do this! Rock on.

edit: how did you connect the board to the wall?

Nice install. I'm getting closer to buying everything i need for a major sound system upgrade and i'm always looking for new ideas of how/where to mount my amps.

I also would like to know what exactly you did to mount the board?
Are you feeding a sub? If so, where is it?

Yeah, it seems like most people mount their amps under the drivers seat or on the back of the rear seats. I use the cargo space of my truck to much to risk the back of the rear seats. As for under the drivers seat, I am saving that space for a carpc install I am working on. Thanks for the complements!

The foward sitting amp's rca's and wires can be tucked under that large panel forward of the amp. Then you can make a fitted hood to go over the 2 amps so as to hide ALL wires. This hood would have to be a 3 piece design but can def be done!

looks awesome!! thats probably where ill end up mounting mine, if i ever do an audio system. lift, tires and a bumper with a winch are much higher up on the list.

The amp rack is mounted to the side wall using qty 2 5/16 carriage bolts with fender washers and lock washers on the back side. If you look at the third or forth pic down you can see the head of each bolt under where the amps are mounted. I then mounted the amps over the bolt heads using square drive screws to reduce the likelyhood of them being stolen. The forward amp is mounted using a 1/4 in spacer to hide the wires of the rear amp. The two Reference 200 amps run the front and rear speakers. I have a third amp which I plan to power the sub. The plan is to build the sub enclosure rear of where I have the two current amps mounted (ie behind the wheel well). The front of the box will extend parallel and immediately beside the wheel well. The sub amp will then be mounted on the outside of this board which will put it facing the two amps currently mounted. So...the front of the sub amp box will extend to cover the two amps and provide a space to mount the sub amp.

This way I can remove the sub and sub amp together but when it is in it covers all three amps. I will post pics when I have completed it. Still need to buy the sub. I am thinking a single 10" Alpine Type R with dual 2 ohm voice coils. I need something that will load down the amp to draw the power out of it yet fit in a small space. I'm just looking to add some lows, not rattle the roof.

if you can figure out how to mount an amp under the rear seat let me know. that is where i had my amp in my old car(grand cherokee) but i do not see how there would be nearly enough room for an amp under the seat of a 4runner

That Is a pretty sweet install... Nice and Clean...
I like to mount my Amps away, Out of sight!!




The only problem with the under the passenger seat on a 3rd gen is the on the Limited and the Loaded SR5's they have a rear heater fan under there!! That's why most Guys are mounting there Amps under the drivers seat!!

And the Amp will not get enough air flow under the back seats..
