Made another Offroad Trailer
I got bored again and decided i need another trailer. I traded off the last one for parts for my m38a1 project. Now I had some square tubing laying around and decided i needed something for camping, but mostly hauling stuff around. This time around I made it larger so i could fit a lawn mower in it. It is 4 by 6 with CJ7 front springs and it is 5 on 5.5 lug for the tires. The tires are 33s. I still have to make the box for it. This time i am not going to make a seperate tub, but rather weld it to the frame, much easier and will make the sides sturdier.
This time around i got smarter and welded on some points to attach ropes or straps to hold stuff in it. I hope to get it done by Halloween to take the kids on a hayride in it.
Hopefully i will keep it a bit longer, it seems like i have made one every year for the last 3 years.

Looks great! Where did you get your spring hangers from? Where did you source the axle from? How wide is it and what is the weight rating?
What size box tubing did you use for the frame?

The spring hangers were actually old jeep ones i had, that i cut in half and opened up to fit the wider springs. But previously i just made the hangers myself with some square tubing. The shackle hangers i made with some tubing and angle iron. The axle i got from a friend. Originally i was going to buy the spindles and weld up my own axle, i did this twice so far. This time my friend already had a 5 on 5.5 lug axle that was 61 inches wide. I cut 9 inches out of it and welded it back together. It was a dexter brand axle and from what he said it was about 150 shipping to him so It was cheaper than me making it, if i bought it for full price. I believe it is a 3500lb axle, it is stout with the main tube as 2.5 inches diameter. The frame is 2x2 square tubing. The pintle eye i got from Northern tool.

I've seen axles of different sizes at Tractor Supply. I'll have to check out prices, and I have a set up YJ springs. Is there much difference between the YJ and CJ springs?
Did you use any specific formula for the distance between the axle centerline and the lunette ring? Or just a guesstimate?

The YJ springs will be 2.5 inches wide, the cj7 fronts are 2. No real big issue. With the 2 inch springs i was able to use off the shelf ubolts and spring plate from Northern Tool. With the wider springs you will need to source spring plates but YJ ones would work fine.
No real formula for me, for this being 6 feet long i pushed the axle a little farther back, but on my shorter ones i kept it centered in the middle of the tub. But generally i just placed the axle in reference to the trailer frame, not so much the tongue.

Getting into the final stretch.
I got the box done.. Used plywood for the fllor jsut because it was easy and i dont have to worry denting the crap out of the steel floor, and i can replace the wood very easy. I have to make pins for the tailgate to index to and lock closed, add tailgate straps to hold the tailgate when folded down. Make or buy fenders, still on the fence bout that one. Add foot plate to landing leg, finish painting and last but not least add a nice reflective triangle on the rear tailgate for use at night. I may add lights later.

Looks good... if you hit that bed with some wood weather seal product it will last longer [if you have'nt already]. Good "project" for the kids to get involved with too.
I'd have gone for 6 x 5.5 axle lug to allow for wheel sharing between truck/trailer but you say you got yours for cheap so...

Yup, It wouldnt stand a chance with it being uncoated
I just got done with the bed coating in it
I did the 6 lug on my last trailer, the 5 lug was for it to match my m38a1 project.
Tonight i take it for its maiden voyage to our local club meeting
