AC compressor OBA, running build
so I have decided to scrap the co2 tank plan in favor of long term savings.
I want to mount a second ac compressor under the factory one and retain my AC...
I just decided OBA was a priority last Sunday after having to run back and forth to town on 10psi driving in the shoulder to keep my speed down. I will up date this as I work on it.
if you have advice ideas or info please feel free...
according to JP mag this is a costly mod, I want to see how cheep I can do it and still do it "right". their total was $370.
I will be using anything I happen to have to keep the cost down.
so far:
1 gal jug of phosphoric acid 16-
tank: 30-
AC bracket 18-
Shipping 12-
compressor: 0-
sub tot: $76
I learned, by accident during lots of searching about OBA that my 1994 Corolla has the same compressor as the Tacoma a 10PA15C, and as its free I guess ill give it a go.
after cutting it out this morning before work I tested it and it does still build pressure, guess the real test will be when it gets pulled apart to grease it.
the tank is a Craigslist find and the type used for Semi-truck breaks this one came off an industrial forklift.
it is 8" x 40" and approximately 2011 cu in or 8.70 gal

finely got some more done today, I hooked it up to my charger and tested the clutch, as it passed that one I began the tear down.
the coolant coated all internals and there was no bunt coolant so it should be GTG.
first get all the round crud off you`ll need a 10mm and snap ring pliers
after the clutch is off, a snap ring for the belt pulley, then another snap ring to pull the magnet.
then i pulled the top off i didn't have the right hex tool, and used a "S2 6" for a screwdriver in a 1/4 in socket.
the same hex socket (or what ever you used before) will pull the bolts to get you into the guts.
after you pull the top off there are these three plates i just pulled them off as one and bagged them as not mess up the order under that are the pistons well 5 of them
then the back plate will pop off there are three more plates with it i bagged them in order with the back plate, this exposes 5 more pistons.
the center body will pull off exposing the wobble plate there are washers and bearings in here so keep track of the order i used rubber bands to tie them to the shaft.
the piston design is rather ingenuous
ok as there are no rings on the pistons and they are Teflon coated, and because of the limited internal space / design differences from the Sanden compressors I will not be doing the grease mod, and will use an inline oilier.

Looks good!. Glad to hear you decided against greesin it. It appears toyota uses this style of compressor in many modles. I havent verifed part numbers but looks identicle to the one on my 7mge in my truck.

For my set up im using an old propane tank which i can sorce for free. Bought an propane regulator part white already has 1/4 npt threads. Ran about 10the bucks.
And since i dont have the lines for my ac compressore i am going to tap npt threads into the manifold of the pump. It looks like the outlet may run 1/4 already and inlet 3/8 but i havent gotten to measure or tap. So it may require large fittings.
The biggest thing i learned is you need a good oiler and seperator. Your basic harbor freight version will not work.
Oil might be fine for air tools but you sont want it in your arb's or your tires.. and lets face it. We dont oil it right it wont stay cheap.

i have seen some folks running these 10- inline oilers that i just did not think would cut it good to know which to buy.
I put the compressor back together today after degreasing, rinsing, drying, and oiling it.
I couldn't find what oil people are running so I used the same oil that's in my shop compressor 30 weight non detergent.
I was thinking that i would tap it, but right now I'm thinking I'll plumbing the tubes that are there, flaring them and going to copper lines along the frame.
I'm getting ready to put the acid in the tank tonight. we`ll see how that plays out.

you will be seeing faster progress after the 21st.
that's right slackers my taxes are done
i just dumped the phosphoric acid in the tank 1/3 of a gal was a bit over kill but the instructions say to do a few steps that you cant in a tank, i just sloshed it around a lot.
Ware protective gloves and goggles at the least this stuff isn't the worst acid that a consumer can buy and you do have time to rinse it off, but why take chances especially with your eyes.
as i couldn't brush it in as advised, I`ll go out and re slosh it a few times tonight then rinse it out tomorrow, dry it and dump rustoleum in and try to coat all of it
the acid i used was Prep and Etch, there are a lot of Phosphoric acid products out there.
