When you say "then it sounds like a toy gun shooting", what exactly are you describing? A Click - Click every time you turn the key or a rat-a--tat-tat noise like a machine gun?

Here is one simple test you can perform:

Yea, bad starter. Have someone tap on the starter while you try and crank it. If it starts. you need a new starter

Okay, my 86 is giving me a click click when i try to start. Sometimes it starts, sometimes it just clicks (sounds like pass side kick panel area). When it does crank, it fires for a second, then dies. Then i crank it again and it lights up, but runs rough, low idles for 15 to 20 seconds before coming fully to life. Seems like two seperate problems, but help would be nice. (not trying to redirect here, hoping for add on info)

4runner901: could be worn teeth on ring gear try turning your engine over and try it again.

plumo57: have you cleaned your battery terminals lately my 86 did the same thing.
