The air flow meter looks sweet polished! I keep hitting mine with mothers every so often but it is a long way from being a mirror shine. I should just pull it off and sand/polish it the right way cus that looks cool.

You don't want to polish your intake, just port it, the intake is supposed to be rough, so that the fuel can bead on the walls and mix with the air better, the exhaust is only ment to be polished so it won't have buildup, your intake should not have build up like that, you are experiencing blow-by, you might need to re-seat your valves, so the exhaust won;t get past anymore

What??

The injectors are in about the last 2" of the lower intake. Why would there be fuel beading upstream of the injectors?

Thats the upper right where the EGR dumps. Are you saying that it looks like my exhaust valves arent seating and during the powerstroke it's kicking out unburned fuel/air and that's causing the buildup? Or did you mean blow by around the rings into the crank case?

I still have valve lash on all of my exhaust valves though...

well the rough sufaces make the air tumble and spin around in the intake which makes it mix with the fuel better, but you are right, before your injectors is it ok to polish but it won;t make a huge different,
it can be both your valves not seating and your rings blowing oil up into your valves then into your intake.

Ok got the valve shim pliers (VW valve shim pliers). Here is a pic of all the tools I needed to get the shims out.

To give you a sense of scale those pliers at the top with the 45*bend are 12" long. LOTS of leverage!!

The allen keys are to lever the shim/bucket down and the screw driver to hold it down while the next size up allen key goes in. Finally when the 3/8" allen key goes in, you can place a small nut on a string using the bent needle nose pliers. The nut holds down the bucket. Then those badass valve shim pliers come in - you try to CRUSH the shim as you pull it up. They pop out pretty easily, then you just fish them out with the 5lb neodynium magnet on a pole.

ITS ALIVE!!!!

BTW - I changed the oil after 50 miles after reshimming, and was planning on doing it next at 500. Is that a good idea or should I do the next change sooner just to make sure there is nothing in the oil?

it's actually slower - I think.... BUT I have a hard time hearing the valves now. Before they were every bit as loud as the injectors. Now I get to hear the melody of my injectors going "tickticktickticktick..." at idle!

The slowness could be attributed to this tank of gas, whilst it is 93 octane, I did accidentally not plug the fuel return line while the truck was down for 3 weeks... Looking forward to the results of a new tank of gas.

The intake looks HAWT!! (and feels that way too should you touch it!! LOL)

ps - PVC mod is a success!! (changed out hoses too)
pss - going to check the VAFM output to see if it starts out at ~5v at idle tomorrow sometime. Looking at hte ranges of impeadances I dont think it is reversed like the 3vzfe's....which bodes well for the 7mgte vafm...
