The end at the trans or transfer case just unscrews. The end at the speedo can either unscrew, twist lock, or have a funky clip. When you see it there will be no question. The cable can simply be pulled out of the casing. Putting it back in, by the way, is damn near impossible. It will teach you patience and reward perseverance.... Get a six pack and breath deeply...

My speedo does the same thing...probably from being lubed by a leaking output shaft seal on the transfer case and then getting dusty on dirt roads. The dealer told me I needed a new speedo cable...$75 if I remember right. It's still sitting on the shelf waiting for me to feel real ambitious.
I don't think they're supposed to be oiled...maybe a dry lube?

Removing cable from behind Combination meter
I came across this post on removing speedometer cables and had the following questions. I have a 95 4runner and was considering greasing the speedo cable. I took apart the dash and removed the instrument panel box or combination meter box to expose the speedometer cable. It sounds like from the posts on here that it is possible to remove the cable from this location is that true and how? What about feeding it back in from here? I pulled up the floor matt to see where the cable went through the body frame and located it on the underside of the car. I tried following it around but loose it above the transmission and cannot see nor feel where it is going or how I would even access it to remove it from this location. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

How does one get the cable actually loose from the truck? I am at the final step, where it goes through the same metal piece as the E-brake cable. It's detached at both ends, just the seemingly impossible metal piece where it goes through the floor.
