Anybody use stuff like Slick 50? I know there are abunch of other stuff that claim to be good. I was wondering of your thoughts on the subject.

are they good?
Should I use them?
Are there any bad side effects?

Here is my .02 cents! Anything added to a full synthetic oil would only hurt it! The best synthetics on the market are amsoil(mobile 1) depending on which one you prefer, valvoline! Stay away from castro syntec, it will gum up your engine and leave a nasty residue on the inside! I hope this helps!

Leave the slick 50 out of the crankcase. I yanked a motor one time that Slick 50 was ran in every 15K. The bearings were burned and there was tar in the lifter valley. In my opinion I wouldn't bother. Plus....The teflon they claim that makes it work would be drained out after you change your oil.

Don't use it. The guys are right. Top synths. are it -- Amsoil, Mobil 1, Redline, Royal Purple -- can't go wrong. Had Castrol Syntech in, got rod knock on startup! Wouldn't recommend.

Soapbox time. Why is it so darn difficult to wash oil, grease off things using tons of solvent/detergent (pot n pans, parts, bbq) yet we were led to believe "start-up" wear was the worst thing since dandruff? Engine internals live in oil. Something to ponder. Ok, enuf from me.

Slick 50 has some bad juju. I worked for BMW in the 80s when they tested it. 3.2 liter sixes and the turbo diesels were used. You should have seen the mess it made of the bearings after 180k miles. Yecch!

The only additives I have found to be worthwhile are the Mega Power series. I ran them for several years in a 300SD with excellent results. No fuel problems, EVER. More power, smoother delivery and 300k miles are common out of trannys that are usually good for about 130k miles. The mechanic I used in Fresno and his diesel burning customers swear by them.

Their oil additive also helped tame our 300TE’s excessive oil consumption due to poor intake guide seals. This was common on 300Es and 300TEs, even after Mercedes replaced the seals under warranty.

I suspect I will try them in our TDI Golf next month when 20k rolls around. And the same for out new Taco when it reaches 20k next year. If anyone is interested, I will be happy to report the early results with the Golf.

One more thought. If it's oil you want, Delvac 1 is what you need. Castrol's Syntech absolutely stinks...

Mr. Taco
What is the stuff that you are talking about, I have never heard of it.
Also would you reccomend it for a gas engine? Or should I just stay with synthetic oil. I was looking at additives because I have to add a quart of oil every 800-1000 miles, and that could get pricey after a while adding synthetic oils.

Don't do it to an engine you love or want to keep a long time... IMO.

livelarg - The only gas engine I have tried it in is the 300TE. Went from a quart every 900 miles (with only about 40k on the car) to a quart every 5000 mile oil change.

Here's Mega Power's Web Site. I think it's best you talk with my mechanic regarding their products. I'll PM his phone number.

THanks for all of the info.
It sounds like it would be better to just go with synthetic oils, and forget the additives.
I will prolly go with mobile 1. I just want to make my engine to last as long as possible.

Thanks

SORRY!!!!!!

Sorry Guys! I had a 89 Dode Daytona a few (actually, quite a few) years back... one morning when it was 35 below zero I started it up before my shift. Well, it started to rap.... BAD! I knew it was a rod bearing. I left the car, caught a ride w/ a friend. to make a long story short, I called a mech. and talked to him about it. The next day, after listening to my car run, he told me this;" you're looking at a long-block. We can do just the bottom end, but you'd have to dump the car." We talked about a few other options, and he then told me; "try slick50, what have you got to lose?"
This is true guys... but I honestly DONT care what you believe.
The car had 77K on it @ the time. I drove the car another 5 yrs. and sold it with 173K on it. When I sold it, it used NO oil, still got 32 mpg. and the girl who bought it drove it to 220K.
The ONLY thing I can credit w/ saving that engine is slick50.
Sorry.
