Options for 98 4Runner SR5 Keyless Entry
I've never been a fan of Keyless Remotes or Alarms, but after having my locks freeze on me a few times, I'm thinking I'd like to add this to my '98 4runner SR5.
Are there any suggestions and/or instructions of which to get. Looking for something reasonably priced that's easy to install. I've read on the forum about an RS3000 and an RS3200. I've also read that 98's had a keyless entry option. Is it easy to get one of those at a junkyard and install on mine?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
-Ted

ted,
if you are at the point of putting something in, don't put in the stock crap rs-series. in fact, take your rs3000 out and get an aftermarket alarm system put in. lots of us have the commando 870. search that term and you will read alot about it.
of course, there are other systems out there, but the c870 is a great bang-for-the-buck. and it works really well

seconded seconded seconded (does that make it thirded? or 2^3?)
Anyway... Going factory maybe "easy" if you already have the harnesses in place, but it's not the right solution. For under $200 you can have a great remote start/alarm system with two-pager and all sorts of goodies.

Thank you for the reply: I will consider this one -- Is there one available without an alarm (i.e. keyless entry only)? I wouldnt hook up the alarm anyways, so maybe there's a reccomended product out there thats a little cheaper?
Thanks

If you don't have power locks now, then you'll need their power lock kit too. I've used that and it works great.

if you install just the keyless, you are already more than half way done in terms of installing the alarm. pony up a few more bucks and just buy the complete system. this is not one of those alarms that go off when a bird flies by, if that is a concern.

I don't know about you, but when I hear a car alarm, I turn my head away from it because 99% of the time it's a false alarm. So, why have one unless it's providing active safety like ignition deactivation.
I bought a $40 universal keyless entry system off of ebay, and it was the greatest investment ever. Took me a few hours to install myself, mainly cause I don't have power locks, but it works like a charm. Next is power windows.
Also, if you don't want to pay the exorbitant amounts of money that shops charge you to install an alarm system, purchase one from www.crutchfield.com and they will send you wiring harnesses as well as documentation on your vehicle to make the job extremely simple.
