Yep, they are fine. Aside from a slightly different battery post setup they are the best of both worlds, high current for starting and deep cycle for discharging.

I've been running one for a few years. For free I'd go for it, if I was buying one now I'd look at the Odyssey.

Nothing to do with current draw or anything. Just corrosion from the fumes coming out of the battery, use something to stop it:

I usually run some of the felt washers on mine, and apply some grease to the terminals to keep the air/fumes away from the bare metal terminals.

If you end up with a bunch of white, caked on crud around your battery terminals, you should remove this before adding felt or grease. A great solution is to take a tablespoon of baking soda and put it into an 8 oz glass of water (measurements don't need to be exact). Then take a toothbrush or wire brush and get it wet with the baking soda/water. Brush it onto the crud. It will dissolve away pretty easily. Rinse with fresh water. Be careful working around the battery, especially with water.

i would regularly clean the battery but got tired of it. plus they "say" that the optimas do not corrode. had i not gotten a free $175+ optima i would take your advise 4crawler and mad city. but now i should have no worry with the battery regarding the stereo/winch/gps/zune charger/cell charger/dvd player when parked or whatever.

Always, always, always get the battery terminal protector and if the battery has vents you spray the hell out of them and the terminals. I use dielectric grease on my terminals myself.

I just went throuhg cleaning all my stuff up b/c although the fumes didnt cake the terminals-they got to the hold down. Had to take it off, clean it off and repaint it.

I've had a Blue Top for a couple of years now, works just fine.

to clean your terminals if your lie me and just pop the hood whenever, just pour some coke on it and that will get rid of the corrosion... but it does leave a sticky residue, great or attracting small animals....
