Exclamation Oil pressure sending unit

Hi guys, its been a while since I posted as my 4Runner has been running great. So today I changed the oil and as I was taking off the oil filter, the wrench slipped and busted off a screw on piece right next to the oil filter. It has a spring in it and looks like a sensor of some sort. The truck runs fine and I will get it replaced ASAP, but I was wondering if anyone knew what the sensor actually does and if its ok to drive the truck in the mean time before I bring it to the dealer. Here some pics.

That looks like an oil pressure switch.....not a sender.
It's the kind that goes to the light not a gauge.

I would replace it as soon as possible. It is under alot of oil pressure and if it pops a leak, it will spew oil out fast.

I was swapping one from the light to the guage and the head of the unit busted off leaving a hole right threw the center of the threads. Take your time getting it off. Make sure you get a good fit with the wrench.

Are you getting any lights on the dash? I would pick up another switch, a place like pepboys should have the right part for cheap.

Thanks guys for the replies. No lights on the dash. Most of the piece is still screwed in so I don't think there is a chance oil will come out, but I hadn't thought of that possibility before.

Mr. Ace, you think an autoparts store would stock it? I thought it may be something I could only pick up at the dealer, but I'll check around at some of the autoparts stores first. Thanks again!

Yep, an oil pressure switch is a pretty common part. They should have one. I picked one up for my MR2 for $18 IIRC.

I don't know if it's the same thing but...

Maybe it will help you out, maybe not. The plastic on mine was cracked a little and spewed oil like crazy!

Yep, that is the same part. Mine wasn't leaking though since most of the sensor was still screwed in. I got the 12.99 one from Advance Auto and it installed and is working. I assume. Since I can't tell a difference with it plugged in or not. Thanks guys!!

Hi,

I see that this post is already a couple years old, but can someone tell me what the Toyota part number is for this oil pressure switch? I have a 2000 4Runner 3.4L. My switch has been leaking since my last oil change so I need to replace it but need the part number.

Thanks very much!!
