I have seen threads on here before about GPS's and just curious to hear from guys that have them what a good system is? I really only want one for a toy, nothing too high powered and am looking to spend no more than $300-$350. I have heard good things about the E-TREX VISTA? Any inputs?? Looks like ther's a boatload of them here

I think if you're in that price range the E-TREX VISTA is a good choice. Those are what our work uses everyday. People really seem to enjoy them also.

Joey, I recently got an ETrex and I love it. It does what it has to and that is it. I would say go with the ETrex line. They are very user friendly and great for what they cost. :fireman:

Garmins are great gps's. Very accurate and easy to use.

i was wondering bout GPS too. im going to get the ETREX LEGEND. ive seen other posts on GPS systems, and ppl say they have problems getting signals while in their truck. is this true? then wats the point of having a GPS. are the signals that weak?

The E-Trex line can be hard to get a signal in cab, but mine works most of the time.

The antenna is built in.
For the most reliable in cab GPS, the bigger Garmins ($500 and up) have the external antenna on them.

But for the most part, mine works well most of the time in cab.

awh realli? so if i mount it on my dash, and im cruising, i may not get a signal? that bites. wats the point of the GPS.

You will get a signal if you mount it like my setup where the top of the unit can see through your window.

Look on my website in the mods section for the bracket I use to hold mine.
The company probably makes a mount for yours too.

When we are wheeling, my GPS is up 100% of the time and getting a signal lock.
But on the highway going up there, it's under very heavy tree canopy in sections, and the signal can be lost for say 5 to 10 seconds at the most.

Not too bad at all.

Hey Joey you should have said that you were after a gps you could have tried my e-map out,I think it would be in your price range and you can stick an external aeril on it, next time we hook up you can try it out.

I got an eTrex Legend a few weeks ago, and I really like it. It's the step down from the eTrex Legend and it's $100 cheaper (which is what made me choose it).

As far as reception is concerned, like Corey said mount it high and you shouldn't have any problems. And don't expect to turn it on while driving and expect it to get a signal, my suggestion is to either turn it on before you start driving, or turn it on when you get to where you're going to use it. But other than that the most i've had it without a signal while driving is 5-10 seconds much like Corey.

Pretty much if you have $350 to spend, get the eTrex Vista (it has an electric compass that you don't have to be moving to use unlike the other eTrex's, and it has I think 24MB of Memory on it where the Legend has 8MB) But if you don't want to spend that much I'd say go with the Legend (the blue one if that makes a difference )

Take a look at the eMap...you can upgrade memory modules to gain more memory and it has a ton of functions!! The emap is about $170, however, the memory is a tad expensive. I think I paid $400 for everything with 128megs of memory.

I like the Garmin 12 Map. It is running around $280-$300.

The big selling point to me is the ability to accept an external antenna.

Thanks for all the inputs! I been looking around today and climbed in my Runner and saw the rip on the side of my seat and it reminded me I would like some Wet Okoles too. Think that would be more functional at this point being I am overseas and would have to buy software just to use a GPS! Now to go do some research on them
