Help diagnose starting problem...starter going?

This morning I went to start my truck in the freezing cold Chicago weather (0-5 degrees) and it wouldn't start. When I turned the key, all of the dash lights, radio, etc turned on so I know its not a battery problem (at least I think not). When I turned the key to start it - NOTHING HAPPENED. It didn't crank at all. As I listened carefully, I could hear a slight "hum" as if electric was getting to the starter but it just wouldn't turn the starter. I must have tried to start the truck about ten times, and in between each time, I woiuld leave the key in the "on" position for about 20 seconds before attempting again. Anyone know what could be the problem? Is the starter sound like its going bad?

Thanks,
Runner4

Could definately be the starter contacts.
Did you try to jump it just to be sure it was not the battery?
Did you hear a click when you tried to start it?

I forgot to mention that it finally did start after about 10 attempts (3-4 minutes). No there was no clicking at all, just a slight hum or faint buzz.

Unfortunately you need to pull the starter to check that.
If it did finally start that is for sure the problem.
You can either replace the starter or they make a rebuild kit for the contacts.

Ya, but if it was the starter, wouldn't you at least hear the typical clicking of the starter? I thought if you didn't hear anything (as in no clicking) then it was probably the battery.

Everything he's describing is exactly what I had as well. I pulled the starter and replaced the VERY worn contacts and cleaned up the plunger(very dirty), now all is good.
Since the lights and radio worked, it is not his battery. Mine made no sound or a faint click. With yours being a '97 I'd assume the starter contacts are very worn, and the plunger is very dirty. Little or no electricity can flow in those conditions.
I got my parts from TOR here on Yotatech for under $20 shipped, it included all replacements for the entire assembly (washers,o rings, teminal bolts, contacts) That way you don't have to try and clean up the old terminal bolts or reuse worn o rings.

Starter contacts!
Mine did the same, about 5 months ago.
Got a starter contact kit, which includes both side, and was good to go. No troubles since then.
Major PITA taking the starter out on the 2nd gen!

Git your PM and I am almost 100% convinced that it's my contacts. Seems to be the issue of the month. Maybe (dreaming) Toyota should do something about it. I will be ordering mu=ine from TOR his week and doing the install mid feb. Mine clicks, doesn't start up a few times, and faithfully turns over as my blood preasure rises. It doesn't get too cold in SB as I think that has direct correlation. there are great write ups from HaveBlue in the tech section and another from Steve(?) on 4crawler(?). Good luck my friend and don't let the AT dipstick hit you on the way out Keep me posted.

Runner4: I just did a search and plugged in TOR's name in the search box.

Here's a post where he replied and it has his contact info. His name is Todd. Just click on

TOR

He is very helpful.
