Genuine Gear what so bad?

I have read the other posts about the gears. I kinda need to replace my stock gears with some new larger ones 4.100 to 4.56 is my planned change. They only reason I ask is that they are cheap. Im looking for somthing just to drive on the road. Not any offroading. Im just trying to find a cheaper gear set. I have heard the the yukons are like $500 plus

Im jsut looking into it, thoes genuine gears were about $100. I dont expect much, but what do they give in the way of a life time warrenty? I really want some other brand, but cant afford them at this point. Anyone know what or where they sell decent gears for fair prices? <Mahalo

I ran them for 40,000 miles before the pinion gear got pitted out and started making a lot of noise. To me gears should last a lot longer than that. I expect gears to last the life of the truck. They are cheap because they are made cheap (I'm guessing China).

Don't be fooled by the lifetime warranty. The first time you have them fail on you and you have to pay the labor to have the whole thing torn apart and have the gears replaced, the fact that the replacement gears are free will be little comfort. At that point you will be asking yourself how many times do I want to pay $200-$300 to have free crappy gears put in. Once was enough for me, I replaced them with US Gears. http://www.usgear.com/default.htm The best you can get IMHO.

Are you talking about the US Gear site? They don't sell directly to users, but they will help you find a local distributor. They helped me find a store within driving distance of me and the price was about $175 a set if I remember right.

Couldn't you locate a set of 4.56 gears in a wrecking yard? It was one of the ratios availible. Buy the whole pumpkin and keep your orig in storage for later. I know yours is 2X4, my buddy bought front and rear (4.56) from a yard for about $300.

The thing is here in Hawaii 4runners never end up in the junk yards. Ive been looking for years to buy the '00 headlights, front bumper ( my old on has dents from raming a lawyer), and of course the limited fender flares. Once a 4runner get wrecked here in hawaii, insurance compaines buy them up and salvage the parts.

The other bad thing is that US gears has no distriubutor here in hawaii. I would love to buy their gear, but it seems not possible.

But on a side not, I was talking to my friend over at 4wheelparts and he said that some of the genuine grears are contracted out to be made by Precsion Gears. He said that the 4.56 in particualr happend to be one of them. He also said dont buy the 4.88 because thoes are the bad ones.

ลลลล 4 wheel parts. Those guys are complete douche bags. Don't listen to anything they say. They are only there to rape you. Don't ever buy anything from 4 wheel parts. I got both my d44 axle and my rear 8" regeared by them, and it was such a hellacious experience that they will never get my business again. Go to pirate and ask why shouldn't buy anything from them...

In fact the guys that does all my work and is a former employee says some of thier stuff is pretty decent. he just doesnt recomedn them to insatll it. He builds all the bid toyota here in hawaii, and says the grears arnt that bad. As long sas thier installed properly

Any yes he (DH built) is the person responsible for all thoes usless sky high lifted 4runner that have been posted in pcitures before. He pretty nuts because thats all custom fabricaterd. Eveyone here in Hawaii doesnt care about practicality, they just want to go higher than the last guy. The owner of DH has a first gen 4runner running 40" tires and some monster lift. His bumper sits the same height as the bottom of his house roof.
