Downey Coils Spacers - Need help...
Hi Guys
I have just brought the 1 1/2 inch Downey coil spacer rear lift kit for my 94 runner and was wondering if anyone here had a set of fitting instructions they could scan in and email to me??
I'd really appreciate it
Thanks
Luke

Here is an article I wrote a few years back on the install of the downey rear kit. It also includes some aditional info they don't include with their instructions.

downey lift
Yeah. I did some "extreme articulation" yesterday and unfortunately the spacer/spring didn't mate well when they came back together.
I'm gonna have to conjure something up to keep them together now. Any suggestions?

Chris, I have a question for you.
On my rig I just have the Downey HD coils, but you can see by this pic here the angle of my panhard rod.
My right rear tire sticks out maybe 1/2" at the most on that side, nothing major like some rigs get if they add the spacer to the coils too.
Is that angle a concern where I should get the bracket like in your pic here?
Look easy enough to put on, and it looks like it lowers it about 2" or so.

For what it's worth...
I am curious about what shocks you are running and if you have considered running limiting straps to keep the spacers on the springs.
I have the Downey coils and spacers on my 95 with some 5009's, the spacers and the coils are seldom as good a friends as they should be.
Current solution is a lot of luck and some good old praying to keep them on. Along with a lot of loud boings!
Possible solutions include:
-limiting straps
-zip ties to keep the spacer on the coil
-drilling the spacer and running baling twine through
Or my best idea yet:
-use zip ties to keep the spring on the axle, then slightly enlarge the spacer so it slides over the bumpstop, then ziptie the spring to the spacer.
Thanks for reading,
Adrian

I'm running Rancho 9009s with my Downey set-up. I think they're the same travel as your 5009s.
I don't really want to run limiting straps but I do like the idea of tying the spacer into the springs with something. I had it suggested to me yesterday to put a "sleeve" of polyurethane around the lower part of the spacer to act as a skirt and hold the two together.
Whadya think?

The upper bumpstop acts as a really good guide to get things situated again and is plenty long so you can use all the shock travel.
I think the best bet is attaching the coil to the axle and the spacer to the coil and then helping the coil separate it self from the bumpstop during articulation. The top has a guide, the bottom does not. My problems always occur when the top stays and the bottom lets go.
I too would stay away from limiting straps.
Have you had any driveshaft issues with the 9009's? Under full extension, things are getting to friendly down there.

I don't think I have any driveshaft problems yet but I'll have to pay more attention next time! I did the usual trimming/bending on the gas tank seem though where the control arm hits.
So, keep it attached at the bottom? Metal brackets or whadya suggest? I may just start with fastening the spacer to the coil and see how it behaves.
Thanks,
Warren

As far as the axle offset, the straighter the panhard rod the less of that offset you will see. Looking at the back of your rig it does not look like the axle is entending that far. It may be that your shocks or sway bar is preventing extension, and thus preventing the drive shaft from getting too close the gas tank.
Look for contact between the drive shaft and tank, if you see contact then I would add the panhard drop bracket.

Instead of running limiting straps to keep the driveshaft off the gas tank, I have gotten a new, thinner OD, but thicker walled shaft, made a custom skid plate and hammered offending metal so I can have a super flexy rear end.
Not all of those mods were intentional, some were a result of not running limiting straps right away combined with other issues.
