Did 1985 4Runner have IFS as option?

Was looking in local paper and found a 85 4Runner listed. Called
about it and the owner said it was IFS and not a solid axle.

Does this sound right? It is about an hour away and I will not '
be able to see it till Saturday.

I thought IFS wasn't until 1987.

85 was the last year of the solid axle on the 4runner. 86 was the first year of the IFS.

IFS was not a factory option on the '85 4Runner. However, its possible that the previous owner had it coverted over to IFS.

Converted to IFS? WHY? :pat:

1986 was the first year for IFSux on the 4Runner and the beginning of the now 4th min-van soccer mobile 4Runner.

I don't think I'd buy a vehicle from somebody who doesn't even know what they actually have...

Should ask my father when he attempted to rebuild a 79 Bronco for me for graduation. He took the body of the 79 and stuck in on a 81 frame. Wish I had photos of it.

I think I will go check it out and see for myself. It has me wondering
what it could be.

I knew 84 and 85 were the years for solid axle. I guess I had a brain
cramp.

Thanks for all the input.

BTW, He is asking $1500.

not without changing the frame or doing a whole heck of a lot of fabrication.

it's probably an '86 model year built in '85.

exactly my thoughts... my 88 was manufactured in 87... so thats what it says on the door jam even though the model year is 87. So chances are your talking about an 86 model year that was manufactured in 85 and therefore apears to be an 85 to the untrained eye.

I read in petersons once that a few IFS Toyota slipped into the 1985 model year.

If the 4Runner is a 85 it still may be a 86 model the first year of IFS. You will need to know the production date, anything after Sept. 85 would be a 1986 model but made in 85. If the production date is sooner I would check out the 4Runner with a close eye looking to see if someone may have swaped vin #s from another truck which would mean something may be salvaged or stolen.

knowing toyota, this wouldn't be all that suprising. there's been some straight axle trucks with turbos in '85, '84 trucks with the '83 L52 tranny, '95 pickups(non tacoma) with the 3.4 etc. most are very rare occurances, but they do exist.

There are seriously 95 pickups (not tacoma or T100 like you said) that ended up with the 3.4? Do you have any idea how many? There must be a VIN # to look for for these rare trucks if that's the case.
