Does anybody have any experience using Amsoil Full Synthetic Motor Oil as motor oil in their rigs? I have an old 1999 Tacoma with the 3.4 Liter V6, and I have always used Castrol Full Synthetic Motor Oil 5W-30. I have long heard rumors and stories that Amsoil is superior to the other manufacturers, but I don't know much about Amsoil other than the fact that they were one of the first manufacturers to produce full synthetic motor oil.

You are 100% correct. Amsoil was the first to do full synthetic engine oil. Mobile1 is the only brand that comes close. IV never ran it in any of my engines due to it being expensive. However I run it in my toyota diffs and it's great. My lockers seemed to benefit from it. I highly recommend using Amsoil if you can afford it. Let us know!

You might like to look into Red Line Synthetic Oil (www.redlineoil.com). I would say that they have better synthetic oils than Amsoil. Red Line oils are TRUE synthetic oils, not just FULL synthetic oils.

To be honest, you'd just be wasting money. Do yourself a favor and look into Shell Rotella oil. I run this in my 4Runner, Scion TC, 1967 Ford Mustang and my lady's 2008 Mazdaspeed 3. The oil is available in conventional and synthetic and can be had for less than $25 dollars for ~5-6 quarts from Walmart or any autopart super store.

I use conventional Rotella 15W-40 in a couple of my older machines, and Castrol GTX in some others.

Both are great products.

I agree that expensive Syn motor oils are mostly a waste of money.

I do run Mobil 1 in my air compressor.

All name brand oils are fantasticly improved over the oils available 30 or 40 years ago.

There are hundreds of thousands of Toyotas that have made 300,000mi, or more on any cheap lubricants that were available.

It has to do with the base oIl stock.

Many synthetics , including Mobil 1, is based off of conventional stock.

Some use synthetic base stock , so full synthetic.

At least that is my understanding.

Doesn't stop me from using the Wally World syn offerings, though.

What sold me on Amsoil was how clean it burned in my V6 Yammy outboard. I use it in everything now. Buy whatever you want but I will be using Amsoil.

I've been running Amsoil in all of my vehicles for quite some time with good results. My 4Runner has been run on Amsoil since I bought it with 89,000 miles (and previous owner used it since ~30,000 miles), now has almost 220,000 and the heads and bottom end have never had any kind of sludge buildup (disclaimer: installed rebuilt heads at about 140,000 due to head gasket). I change my oil every 7500 miles these days with Amsoil Signature Series 10w-30, I've gone as long as 15,000 or one year in the past but decided 7500 is a safer choice. ALWAYS use a quality oil filter too, Amsoil sells excellent ones. The oil filter you use matters more than the brand of synthetic oil honestly, especially if you want to use longer change intervals.

Practically speaking I'm not sure there's any "real" difference between any of the high-end synthetics, but I use Amsoil because they are a one-stop shop to buy all oils (engine, diff, transmission, blinker), oil filters, air filters, etc and have them shipped to my door. If I wasn't running Amsoil I'd use Mobil 1 Synthetic, but for the extra few dollars I think I get sufficient value from Amsoil.

Regarding "full synthetic" vs "true synthetic," that's B.S. marketing speak, not a real difference. Just make sure you're getting a full synthetic oil and not a synthetic blend.

I'm running Amsoil in my engine and rear diff. I believe my diff is running pretty cool at 157 degrees on a hot day at 65 mph per a temperature probe..

I agree the synthetic oil is probably unnecessary, but I use 5w30 Castrol Synthetic and I use a the 4.0L V6 1GR-FE toyota brand engine oil filter which is a little taller and extend my oil changes to 10,000KM in Canada eh, I also use a engine flush every other oil change.
