I have come across a 2000 4Runner in one of the local salvage yards today and started thinking about some things. The 4Runner does have an E-Locker and it is a Limited so that tells me it has 265 tires (didn’t look while I was there) so that combination would be a 4.30 gear ratio. I am considering a few options as I can’t just let an E-Locker go to waste right?? Plus, I am a sucker for punishment and I like to tinker more than “wheel” it seems…

Options:
1.) Buy complete rear axle drum to drum for $190 something and sell it for more online.

2.) Buy just the third member and sell it for more online (not sure about initial cost).

3.) Buy just the third member and sit on it in case my actuator fails sometime in the future (pricy repair).

4.) Buy the complete rear axle and sit on until/in case I decide to get a 3rd Gen 4Runner. I like them a lot, am always looking for one, and would really prefer an SUV over my standard cab Tacoma especially for the leg room/ability to recline. With that being said I would swap out the rear axles as this would allow me to consider the 2001 and 2002 4Runners not just the earlier E-Locker equipped 4Runners.

5.) Swap out the third member with my 4.10 ratio E-Locker to return my truck to factory gearing (came with 31s but 33s on it now). I realize this would involve swapping the front diff out too (for another $190 dollars) so here is a major question I have (and yes I have searched but I am still confused ). Would I be able to replace my Tacoma’s 4.10 front diff with the 4Runner’s 4.30 front diff given the fact the 4.30 is an ADD system and my truck is a NON ADD system? If it is not a plug and play scenario what steps would I have to take to make the front compatible?

I appreciate your sense of humor. I take it you are unable to answer the question of whether or not I can swap front diffs due to one being ADD and one being manual, is this correct?

yes you can swap them. you just have to use the short non-AAD tube from your current diff. from the research i have done alot of people do this when they switch the 4runners to manual hubs, that way they dont have to find a matchbing geared diff.

if you dont want the AAD anymore you can switch the passenger side tube that is connected to the diff. you would just take yours off your current diff and put it on the diff with 4.30 gears.

Will I need any additional components e.g. seals or different length bolts? I don't want to run into any delays once I begin. Thanks.

Thanks for the input everyone. Any pointers for an easy removal of front and rear axles from a fairly rusty 4Runner besides fresh batteries in cordless reciprocating saw?

spraying WD40 liberally on the bolts and nuts and leaving them overnight often helps.

a good set of 6-point socket wrenches and open wrenches will also be useful. I wouldn't use china-made tools on them
