99 4unner engine problem

Just recently my 4runner's been behaving quite weird. When i started the car, the engine sounded horrible. It sounded LOUD like something grinding coming form the bottom. I would then shut off the car and pull the key out and the engine would continue to run for about 2-3 seconds. Then it would sputter to a stop. When I restarted the car, it started up and sounded fine like normal. This already happen twice so I'm writing to you guys to try to figure out what the problem could be. Any suggestions/help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

It's a 3.4L Supercharged Sr5. The timing belt was replaced about 2 years ago when my motor blew. Thanks

Elton,

Thanks. I was actually a member before but for some reason when I tried signing on today it didn't recognize my id and my email so I had to re-register.

You can ask the admins to help if you want your old ID back and it isn't taken by someone else.

Yeah sounds like a timing issue

I'm w/ Jamie on this one. My belts look slightly worn and need replacing, and once in awhile, it makes that awful sound upon start up. I don't have the other issues w/ pulling the key and the motor still running but the horrible noise, I've had.

It sounds like your starter contacts may be bad. The grinding is from the solenoid staying kicked out against the ring gear, then when you shut it down the starter stays engaged trying to spin up the engine again...hope it's this and not a timing issue.

Basically, I think it was my whack ass refurbished TRD Supercharger. It was installed by the dealer but never sounded right. I floored it one day and it blew at 80K+ miles. Now with everything rebuilt, it runs great. Everything was rebuilt/replaced including the timing belt so I don't think that's the problem.

But I think SLC97SR5, nailed it on the head. It could very highly be the starter. Now, can anyone show me where it's located? And how to replace it?

Thanks
