HighLux' 1987 4Runner Build-Up Thread

So....I joined the first gen club. I admit it. I have been giving cpr to 2 dying 2nd gens...when all I really needed was a first gen. I gave into my envy o' the 2 doors......Ill probably sell/part the 2nd gens.

Im in love. Chris....an employee...found this on CL in Knoxville TN.
He wanted 4000 with some ghetto style black wheels. Chris asked him if he would take less with the stock wheels.

I got this for $3000. When we got there after driving 540 miles, we crashed in a hotel and in the morning went to see it. I was excited but expecting a let down. I was stunned. I saw it...she was sweet. A father and son rebuilt this rig in the garage. They had skills. I have a billion reciepts....tons of extra parts....extra paint....they set me up.

22re has 10k miles on complete rebuild with new head...etc...
seats recovered. Great paint with a couple small bubbles.

Ill post some pics of what they started with because they deserve the props.
I just got real lucky.

I put these whels on before even going inside when I got back.

The 99 4runner is my DD and suprised me with 20 mpg with the air blasting...and the 87 got 24 on the highway.

Few pics. Like?

Looks great! Hope you enjoy it.

I'm seriously thinking of adding 'tippy gauge doodle' to my list of equipment in the sig line.

I got the 93 and wanted restore it...but I fell for the first gens. I feel a litle guilty....but...the first gen makes it all go away. She's hot!!!

So....riddle me this.....will the 5 speed from a 2nd gen 3.0 fit in a 1st gen 22r? diff tranny? anything I should snatch off one of the 2nd gens for the first gen? I thought I saw someone swapping carriers from a v6 into a 4cyl?

Any help would be cool.

Dave

By the way I love this site.....you guys rock. No bickering...just cool people.

Yeah, I had a couple 2nd gens before I got my 87. I like the 1st gen MUCH more. Uh, your R150F (manual trans) out of the 2nd gen wont work with your 22RE unless you use an R151F bell housing from a turbo (22RTE). You're not going to benefit by doing that, since you would then have the inferior chain driven transfer case vs. the gear driven case behind your current tranny. The diffs (carriers) on the other hand, may be worth looking into. I'd be checking the '94 with the auto trans for a gear code on the door. If it's a G144, then it should have factory 4.88's which would be nice if you plan on running larger tires. The V6 carriers are also a bit stronger than your 4 cyl carriers in the 1st gen.

Thanks...that is what I was looking for. It has manual lockouts already...but one is real stiff....so Ill probably rebuild them. All the suspension is stock and front end is a little wore...so thats where I plan on starting...going through the front end. Im too tired to go look at the door tag...but I will tomorrow.

Ill get all my pictures on my laptop tomorrow as well and let you guys look her over.

This will be much more fun then resurrecting the cursed 3.0 slows.

This lil truck is my new buddy.

I noticed she had a little gurgle at idle and would sputter and drop the idle
pretty bad when the ac was turned on. The PO had mentioned it may need an oxygen sensor....so I went to autozone snatched one up. Cleaned the idle right up and now she doesnt stutter with the ac on.

Checked the oil before and after trip home from TN. Right on the money and clean as a whistle.

Well..I adjusted the valves today and alot were too tight.
She idles alot smoother and there is a seat in the pants differance.

Also...popped off the top for my first time. How sweet.

Getting a little more familiar with the engine layout and such.

A hear a light growl in the tranny...input shaft bearing I bet.
Soon as I find a spare...Ill rebuild it or maybe order one of the rebuilt
marlin ones. $1145 isnt too bad. I just put a trans in my 2006 e350 superduty ford. It grenaded the lower planetary at 57k. $1688 for that to be rebuilt with me doing the r and r.

Been running like a top. Drive it almost every day.

Air lost its charge...but when I was adding freon I found the leak...loose connection to compressor....and she's blowing cold.

I need to do some front shocks. And I have to do a cv boot.

I love taking this truck fishing.

Gonna change the fluid in the Diffs/transfer/trans tomorrow.
Think I got a cv boot torn too. Stiff manual hub too.

Got some cheap gear oil. I wanna run it i week and then change to better.
Kinda a flush type deal. The oil may be good..may be bad...I dont know..but its a good start for me getting under this thing and working on something new to me.

Ok..it was a oily dirty day. Changed fluid in rear end. It was really clean. Must not of been in there too long.

Transfer case...yucky...but still gear oil. No water. Not alot drained out though...case does have a whine in 4wd. I have a solution to this...

Trans...Same as transfer case...yucky, but oil. Trans has had a little growl ...solution in mind as well.

Took apart the lockout hubs and re greased and assembled. Now both turn freely and work as they should.

Noticed a rattle in the passenger brake pads...took em out and realized a piston in the caliper was seized. Went to my file of recipts from the PO.
SCORE...reciept for a pass caliper w lifetime warranty from orielly's. Picked up the new one...bled front brakes...good to go.

Couldnt help but notice the decent shocks on the rear...but the fronts were toast. Pass side shock was so easy to collapse....and it stayed down. That one was a goner. Slapped some new shocks on and rides alot smoother and less jarring.

So...I had my first day under a first gen. I am really suprised how simple it is.

So...think Imma do some more front end stuff next weekend...maybe even later this week. Ball joints and tie rod ends , etc....

Tracks really straight....but pulls a lil left on braking....no its not calipers...thouroughly inspected. No its not air in lines. Bled em good.
All lines are free from kinks, bends, etc... so Im thinking its flopping over on
the other side of the balljoint on braking....

Input?

Im going to do a straight axle on the 88. Thats along way off though.
I wanna get the 87's front end all rebuilt ....then do a chain job on the 88 first.

Im tired and still smell of gear oil.

Who has a sweet trick for getting oil in the diff/tranny/tranfer without making a huge mess? I tried a hand pump...but it was lame. I did the tube on the end of the bottle deal...but that sucked too. Even got it in my hair. I hate that.
