A New Member w/ A New (to me) 4runner

Hi everyone - having been a Jeep'er for the past 16 years it was time for another rig and I made the jump and picked up an 87 4runner to start playing with. My previous Jeeps have seen everything (5.7 Vortec swaps (CA compliant), drive train, axles, suspension, etc) and now I'm looking forward to building a solid rig on the Yota foundation.

The new 4runner is all original w/ the 22re (139k) and even has the original pin striping. Interior is stock w/ an upgraded stereo so nothing special. My goal is to build a solid hunting rig - nothing crazy.

At this time I've pulled the motor and have all the goods at the machine shop getting decked, shaved, cleaned, and whatever else is needed. The one question I have is does Toyota sell .020 over piston and rings? My preference is to stick with factory rings but I haven't seen any factory .020 over rings???

Other upgrades will be a factory front straight axle swap and 4.7 transfer case upgrade. Ill be sticking with 31 or 32 inch tires and hope this project is a fun one.

Ted at engnbldr on engine parts

Anything smaller than a 35 is going to look small on a SAS. 4.7 gears is a great upgrade.

Welcome to Yotatech.

Thanks Wabbit - I should have mentioned too that my engnbldr parts are schedule to arrive today (ordered late last week). I have yet to order piston, rings and bearing because I'm waiting for the machine shops diagnosis on the cylinders. Walls looked excellent so if I can re-ring and be 100% ill go that route.

As for sas and tires - I was looking at a set of factory springs (pretty much flat) to make things work. If 35's are the way to go then I may hold off until a larger motor is swapped in.

And finally - this site rocks. Prior to buy the 4runner and joining here I read all the posts and figured this is the place to be.

Thanks

That there are my favorite style of runner!!

You'll like how that lil 22re will run after it's rebuilt even with the 35's. Just gear it and go...
