Swapping a 350 in 85 4runner wiring questions

Just took the 22re out of my 854runner. Putting in a chevy 350. I was wondering if anyone could help me figuring out what wires under the hood I could get rid of? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Carb on the 350?

I just did the same thing.

You can get rid of virtually ALL of the wires coming from the ECU.

I did this, but had to run 3 or 4 new wires.

I ended up having no ignition power. I ran a power wire from the AM1 80 main fuse under the hood to the ignition.

I also ran a toggle switch to a relay, the relay to the HEI distributor coil. Powered the relay from the AM1

I kept the stock starter solenoid wiring intact, so I can turn the truck over with the keyswitch.

I kept the stock wires for the headlights/turn signals, horn, and temp/oil sensors. All of these wires are on a separate harness than what comes out of the ECU.

I ran a new power wire from the battery to the AM1 fuse and to the starter. Ran a new ground cable from the battery to the frame, frame to the block, and frame to the body.

If you have any other questions just ask.

No. Thought about it, but chose against it, for a few reasons.

I'd have to buy a pressure regulator to limit the pressure to 5-7psi for the carb. Regulators are like $75

Then I'd have to wire it up to yet another switch and relay. I already have one switch for the ignition power, and another for the fan power. Dont want another.

Its not really nessisary when you can just use the stock mechanical pump. I see no advantage using an electric pump with a carb on a mild engine.

Plus, I was able to sell the pump for $25

What I did was removed the pump from the bracket, found one of the steel lines (previously the return line I think) that reached the farthest down into the tank, traced that line to the front of the truck, and plumbed that into the carb. My only worry is that, without a fuel sock in the tank, it could pick up debris, but I should be able to see debris in the clear "G2" fuel filter right before the carb.

I havent had enough time on it yet to say anything. Maybe 100 miles.

It has held up to about 5 burnouts though

It will be fine though. I'm using the R150 V6 transmission, which is the same trans used in the Supra, known to hold up to 600hp.

The 4cy trans will not last though.

Any updates on the swap? Looks like I will have to go check it out in person. I am also leanin towards a SBC swap. It will be fuel injected though.

Keep it mild and go easy on the skinny pedal and you should be OK.

That being said, its VERY hard to keep out of the skinny pedal. I'm already looking into making a tracbar setup to cut back on wheel hop (so I can do some REAL burnouts)

yea..i love my skinny pedal...lol..but i think..as long as im not hard on it..i'll be ok..thinking maybe a 305 chevy will be a better choice..lol..little less HP...im not looking for a HARDCORE motor..i just want something stock..stock 350 is about 260HP...which is WAYYYY MORE THAN ENOUGH..with that much HP..it'll make that toyota fly down the road no problem at all

swap

ok I am back working on my sbc swap into my 85 4runner. It previously had a auto if that helps. Everything is real close to being done. Just down to the electrical part! I threw a battery in it tonight and I am not getting any power to the inside of the truck> I am getting power to the fuse block under the hood. I did remove the ecu and the harness attached to it??THat is the only set of wires that I removed! I have all new grounds from battery, engine, and body all going to the same spot on the chassis!! SOme one please give me and idea of where to look next! The truck originally was a 85 4runner efi, auto 4x4. THe 350 is carbed also.

I've bought a few crate motors that are rated 250 hp / 350 torque. Nothing special, just a stock 350 with made in Mexico heads...

The vortech 350's in the mid to late 90's came with 255 so he's probably thinking with an intake setup and exhaust he'd have 260, be my guess anyway.

just took another look at the wiring. I reconnected all of the factory quick connectors and seems that one of them wasnt fully connected. Now everything inside works!!!!!!!!! All I have to do now is find a wire off of the ignition that is hot only when the key is on for the starter solenoid and my msd box. For the box I will test the factory toyota coil plug but might just use the lug on the early style ford starter solenoid that I installed. Jared
