Iam just about fed up with not being able to keep with highway traffic because my 22re wont go no harder..Dont get me wrong i think the toyota engines are the best out there but i was thinking of going to a V8 But i need to know what you people think would be the best engine to go with and what kinds of problems am i going to run into mainly how iam going to make this work..

 

what about regearing? Cheaper option. I see your running 33's. Gearing would make a big difference in your ablility on the HWY.

 

what do you want it to be able to do? V8's are heavy and i would recomend stonger axles but a light foot can save your stocks. the supra motor is nice and bolts to original mounts i believe tons of power aswell. i went 3.4 personaly. check out the lexus v8 swaps thats another cool one ive seen and wish i did

 

Turbo the 22RE! Still capable of good gas mileage but the power is there when you need it. Plus turbo motors are just cool.

I am VERY happy with my setup. Still haven't gone to the Dyno, but I think over 200hp to the wheels will be pretty easy (and over 250ft/lbs). With very basic tuning i'm still getting about 18/19mpg (I run 33's and stock gearing) and its running rich. I haven't gone through a tank yet on the full turbo setup that didn't see some trail time.

There are adapters and wiring harnesses available to save time

 

or you could get rid of the 33x12.50. thats your problem. i had the same tires then switched to 31x10.5 and problem solved. or re-gear like someone said.

if you are thinking of throwing in a different engine the 7mgte would be the easiest and maybe the best for your situation. Or if you can get your hands on a 3.4 that would be good too. Will need to do a little modification to hold the engine and the maybe the tranny toofor the 3.4 and 350. a 350 would break something easily just like on extreme 4x4.

 

re-gear (it isn't as expensive as you might think) and if you're gonna re-power, the 1uz (lexus 4.0L v8) or the 1jzte (supra twin turbo straight six 2.6L) are both good options. do some research and you will be surprised with the power numbers from both motors. you can pick up the 1jz from the jdm market for around $1000 plus shipping and the 1uz's come up every now and then for under $1000 plus shipping. either one would be a great motor. tranny options are pretty open too...seems like these swaps are becoming more popular. if you want to go more mainstream, the older supra 7mge or 7mgte (turbo) straight sixes are both tried and true swaps into yotas for a good price. imho, stick with toyota stuff. lots of guys go with the chev 4.3 or 350 or ford 5.0 and its just not as cool as a keeping it pure. just some thoughts...

 

Well where can i find a turbo for it and everything else that I need...Iam leaning more towards the turbo and mods ...So i dont have to do a engine swap right away...

 

what kind of gearing did u use in your toy i like the pic what kind of lift have you got and have u got IFS or the SAS

Turbo's were available from the factory on 86/87 trucks, so you can use a lot of Toyota parts to get the job done (all if you really want, but I'd highly suggest something other then the CT20 turbo). I'm not sure if there is any single website you can buy all the parts as a kit, but you should be able to get a lot of them from the dealership.

Darin, Jeff and myself's motors are all heavily modified though...

If I were you I'd look for a used 22rte motor (factory turbo charged 22re) and swap it, the ECU and fuel pump. Hang a new exhaust on it and drive it. It would be a lot cheaper and eaiser then buying all the parts. It'll be an easy swap because its the same motor.

it's an 84, so solid front with marlin 4" lift, 1" body, and 1.5" rear shackles to level everything out with gear loaded running on 37's....just about right but i wouldn't do the body lift over again.

OK so if you want to look cool in town, throw a SB V8 in there. Ford 302 or GM 350, your preference. It will be loud, and fast and get noticed for sure. But I wouldn't waste my time on any of that high end Lexus stuff just for cool factor. Thats a different crowd that finds that cool. Sounds to me like you want the Hillbilly Deluxe Toy which probably had nothing Toyota on it except the body.

well, as far as gears go, i went with 5.29 yukon's...those with 35's let me do 75 mph on the freeway with a lightly built 22r. in my older 83 pickup i had the same set up with a stock 22r and it did just fine as well.
