Welcome to the forum.

What is the main use of this vehicle going to be??

It might also depend where you live. in the great rust belt this liquid brine is destroying all the vehicles .Meaning constant attention.

Do you want a pick up or a 4Runner?

You would have room in an extended cab for you subs.

well start reading.

How much mechanical skill do you have?? Do you have a place to work??

Do you want a project or a turn key where all the work is done.

I have yet to buy an older model, higher mileage vehicle that I didn't have to put at least $500 in parts into. If you're looking at $4k, I'd reserve about $1200 for the first 3-4 months until you know you're past any bugs.

What are you looking to do with your lift? Personally, I don't advise lift blocks for the rear. Depending on what you're going for, longer shackles can gain you an inch or two in the rear. IFS ball joint spacers can get you some lift up front. Unless you plan on doing that wrenching yourself, you're again looking at about $300-$400 of labor just for that. It only goes up if you get into more extensive lifts.

it depends on your use for the truck. like stanz said, when i bought my 94 i had to put almost 1000 into it right off the bat. and if you do find one with no issues it will cost you a bit. it all depends on how much you can do by yourself. its hard tellling not knowing what you really need it for.

If you're looking to haul around a dirtbike in the back, i'd be looking for a v6 extended cab tacoma. Great motor with probably adequate power, but it's going to cost you. Tacos aren't cheap. I know dirtbikes arent't the heaviest things in the world, but i wouldn't probably want to tow one with the older 4 cylinder, and the v6 previous to the tacoma gets crappy gas mileage and isn't much fun to work on.

As a point of reference, I bought my 86 4runner for 4k in December. It was a long distance purchase and I even had it checked out. It was the worst purchase I ever made. I'm over 4k into it on top of what I paid. Not what I was expecting.
