can i hook in the poitive lead direct to the battery poitive post? or is there some other device to reduce spikes in the elec current that i should put in line. i either over heard or read some where about soemthing like this , and im getting ready to hook up my winch, well next week, and id like to know if there is anything else i need before doing so.
i had a winch that i installed on my 1996 t-100 and hooked direct to the battery , i didnt have any problems with it , but i never had to use it either. any help fro myou electric gurus would be greatly appreciated.

My Warn XD9000 winch I had on the 4Runner (soon going on the FJ when the ARB gets installed) wired directly to the battery.

You don't really want to hook it to anything else. The battery is about the only thing that can handle the current loads that the winch creates.

ok, thanks , jsut wanted to make sure.
i think when im ready to do a dual battery set up ill let the professionals set that up, but for now single battery , winch directly to the battery .

I went by "Bailey" fork lift dealership today asked parts guy about those connectors frklfts use. He showed me different size's and said 4wheeler get them all the time to hook up winches...will have pixs when done

I put a cut off switch in line, but I also have the wires running to the back of the truck so I have more of an electrical fire danger.

i am putting a power cut off switch in line also, my plans eventually are to have a pulg in for jumper cables too, and the power cut out will be in line for that also cutting off any power so as to not be used improperly

I wired my M8000 directly to my AUX battery, prior to that it was wired directly to the main starting battery. I installed a dual battery system specifically to handle my winch and accessories. I also have a Hella battery cut-off switch that I will be installing on the AUX battery to kill all power to my accessories. Do you have to wire an in-line fuse or will the one in the winch (I am assuming there is one) be enough?

corey excellent dual battery setup writeup. very detailed, and it helped answer a few questions i had . thanks again. i love it when someoen else does something youve got planned so they can work out the bugs first and then have a forum like this to share the experince.

I think I used a Warn solenoid on my truck, but my dad uses a marine grade HD continous duty solenoid on his cummins and burb, no problems.

I have also wired up a quick disco for my jumper cables, so I certainly wanted an on/off switch.

One suggestion. What I did is run one cable to the solenoid then two seperate + leads, one for winch one for jumper cables. What I am going to do on my next truck is One lead down to the solenoid, then one lead to the frame, then on an isolated post seperate, it just makes the battery area cleaner. One the - side I run one cable to the frame, bumper mount bolts, then I bolt that wire to the frame, but with the same bolt have two more wires leaving, one for the winch and one for the jumper cables. What this did was a single cable from the battery, a direct ground for the winch/jumper cables, and gave me a huge chassis ground.


As far as dual battery setups, going to see if I have room under the hood of my taco, I prefer to make it super simle. Two batterys of the same make/model (mixing deep and starting causes charging issues), then I connect them thru another HD continuous duty solenoid. The power for the solenoid comes from a oil pressure switch. When the engine is running the batteries are one, for charging and use. When the engine is off they are isolated to you only run down the aux with aux lights, winch, etc. I also plan to rewire the stereo and headlights to run off of the aux battery. If you ever need to tie the batteries together you just wire the solenoid hot and bypass the oil pressure switch. While you dont have the option to disconnect the aux battery while driving it would be very simple to wire a 3-way switch, on, off, pressure sensor.
