Battery and Brake light just came on....? What does it mean?

My wife was driving the 87 sr5 22re and the battery and brake light came on on her at the same time. Is this something specificly complicated or just have battery and alternator bench tested? Or are the two radomly unconnected?

She also thought that when she made it back to the house that she saw steam and the over heating "gurrling" but the temp gauge was normal?

On a side note is it a battery warning light or an alternator warning light???

Have the charging system checked. That batt/alt light comes on when the system drops below a set voltage.

Sorry, don't carry the alternator brushes (do have them for the blower motor), but see below for a writeup of the repair:

thanks to all. I've been laid up in the hospital for some knee infection removal surgery. So I will pull the alt and have it bench tested and hope it hasn't killed my battery.

if the alternator stopped charging and the truck overheated at the same time the belt probably snapped or the water pump locked up. I just had the same exact thing happen with the two lights and you could tell that the engine was being held back a bit. I ended up replacing the water pump, belts, tensioners, fan clutch and I took my alt to a rebuilder but it was in good shape.
