I was on Craiglist looking at Toyotas, and came across this little gem:

Now, that got me thinking... Could you just put that onto a 4x4 frame/drivetrain? And if you could do that fairly simply (IE with minimal to no fabrication work), wouldn't it be sweet to lift it? I was thinking of how cool that would be to get a little Toyota RV, and put it on 35's, lock the rear, and ARB up front. How about a 3.4 swap with supercharger? I think that would be the baddest thing on the road. Can you imagine getting passed by a S/C 3.4 swapped motorhome? Haha. That would get you into the serious backwoods, and then you wouldn't even really have to set up camp.

You could also party it up in that thing, since it does sleep 6-8. You'd need some sliders, and some armor, though. Maybe a partial exo cage to protect the fragile camper on the back. You'd also want to go with a Solid Axle up front.

I don't think I'd need another car. It would be fairly quick(with S/C 3.4 swap, and possibly 5.29's or higher gearing), very capable offroad, one of a kind on the road, and off, and can you imagine pulling out a stuck Jeep with a motorhome?

It's just an idea I've been wondering about. If I had an extra $25,000 laying around, I'd build it.

Any thoughts on this.

Also, that thing would be so top heavy it would be silly to try and wheel it. You would spend tons trying to protect it, only to damage it trying to wheel it.

Ok, maybe not 6-8. Probably 4 though. I saw those 4X4 ones on that site. They look pretty cool. I still think it would be neat though.

In my opinion it's a total waste.
It would be so top heavy the slightest rock would bump it over.
It would be so wide you couldnt fit through half of the trails.
A dolphin or the likes is great for what it is. A warm, dry, comfortable, mobile structure for camping.

It would be a VERY rare occasion you found yourself in a difficult enough situation to actually put your lockers to work without being in danger of flopping or tearing the hell out of the exterior. Also, have you ever driven a box van? A motor home? A utility truck? It's a little nerve racking backing up when all you can see is down the side of your vehicle through the mirror. You're just wondering when your going to hit that pole or whatever's behind you.
It would be cool and fun and great and exciting... for a little while. Eventually you would begin to realize it's no fun wheeling a motor home, its a pita to drive something on the road that is built for wheelin.
If you wanna go have a good time wheelin, build yourself a trail rig.
If you want to wheel to an area where you can enjoy yourself camping, well build yourself a custom long bed with a bed/cargo area or get into a tent.

If you want a Toyota motorhome that can handle a rough dirt road or a spin on the beach, lock the rear. That will tackle whatever terrain is reasonable for the motorhome lol

A hardcore motor home trail rig wouldn't be reasonable.. its more or less the worst of both worlds.

As for the 3.4 swap, that would be pretty badass

Again, just my take on wheelin a motor home. I dont mean to shoot your idea out of the water

I agree about practicality on the road/trail, now that I've looked at it a little more. A potential problem I see, other than flopping it on it's side/roof, would be if the suspension flexed out, I can imagine the frame would also. The wood/aluminum structure on the back probably wouldn't fare too well. As an Idea, I like it, but it probably hasn't been done for a reason.

My friend in college had a Toyota 4x4 motorhome. On heavy snow days, we'd get up there before they closed the roads and sleep in the ski resort parking lot. That truck gave us a lot of good powder days.
