FJ60 or 1st gen 4Runner?
I have been considering buying either an FJ60 Land Cruiser or an 84-85 4Runner.
I know the LC has more torque and hp, but is also probably quite a bit heavier. Either way I want a solid axle. I have heard that the 2F/3F engines are bulletproof, but then again so is the 22R.
Which would you choose?

Even the fj60 owners I know would rather have a mini. especially when it comes to wheeling the 60 is a fat, underpowered, heavy, trail clogger. Its beautiful though. The mini is lighter, cheaper, more reliable, more capable, larger aftermarket, more parts, more in junk yards...
I love land cruisers, but in my not so humble opinion, the FJ60/62 is the worst land cruiser, best looking, but most worthless by far!
BTW I own a fj62.

Probably would help to know your intended use and needs. 2 doors or 4? More bare bones or a more comfy interior? Keep it (near) stock or build it up? Probably have more build up options on the pickup/4Runner than the '60. I used to drive an FJ55 and now an '85 4Runner and the 4Runner is hands down better all around. Never driven a '60, but have a buddy who used to drive a 1st gen 4Runner and he swapped to a '60 when he hit first child got old enough to go wheeling and he had a 2nd one on the way. 2 doors just did not cut it with the family and he needed to carry more gear with the wife and kids. I think he now has an FJ80.

If it were me I'd go with the Land Cruiser. The 60 is such a beautiful rig! I really want one! As far as wheeling characteristics, I wouldn't know, as I've never wheeled one.

I would go with the Landcruiser also, the 4 runner is not going to get much better gas mileage and feels so cheap and tinny compared to the LC.
I have had them both.
The LC is also very capable in stock form, throw an OME lift and a locker in the rear and you will be set.

Runners hardly feel cheap and while they may be smaller, they're every bit as stout. I LOVE my 1st gen 4runner, but Personaly I wouldn't want a newer one. That's a personal preference thing, the newer gens are sweet, they're just not my style. I love how utilitarian the 1st genRunner/2nd gen trucks looks and everytime I get in my truck I imagine I'm back in Australia heading out into the bush. Comparitively, the 60 will haul more stuff, and IMO if swaped to some form of Diesel would make one awsome long haul but still very off road capable type rig.
It really comes down to what you want.
-The WB of a 1st Gen runner is about perfect and the size is a real asset out ohn the trail. They're smaller, yes, but they can still haul alot of stuff for their size, I'm always amazed at that'll fit back there. For a 2 Person expedition they're great. 3 people is doable, and 4+is a pain in the ass. That said, they'll haul 5 people out to wheel and back for a day trip thing.
-The 60 is bigger and as I said is more of a family hauler. They're really roomyu inside and are pretty dam comfortable cruising down the highway if they have some sound deadining added to them. They're really very capable trail rigs as well, but like a full size, their size can get them into trouble. Couse all that wheel base can also make them climb very very well.
Tough Call, and finding a 1st gen runner in really good shape is getting tougher by the year.
Hope to see a build one of these days.
Cheers
Dave
