Did his question not provide enough info?
I'd say the 80's pickup. Its better because it has more style. Thats all that matters. Chicks dig style. And if your lucky, you'll get one with 4wheel drive, so thats better. And it has a solid axle, which is better.
Cost of insurance will be cheaper because its older. Thats better. Early 80's has round headlights. That just cool. The bed on the older trucks are better because the have tie-down spots on the outside of the bed, again just cooler. The 80's truck is smaller, so you can fit it in tighter places which makes parking easier. Thats better.
Over all, 80's technology surpasses 90's technology. 80's had better music too, so thats better. I say go with the 80's.

Buy a Taco with a v-6 and turn your 88 into a Truggy.
Most of it comes down to what is going to make you, the truck owner, happy and what you can afford. Not much sense putting 4 Grand into something with a market value of 3K..that is just an example IMO...Your 88 could be fine for the $500 repair and than something else could go out. And if you get a 'newer' Tacoma you may end up having to sink some more $$$ into it unless you buy new. Roll of the dice.
Plus if you get a PreRunner you are just gonna wish down the road you got a truck with two driveshafts instead of one...Good luck!
