winch strengh decreases with each wrap?????

ok guys im confused. They say a m8000 warn winch (any winch) has the max pounds of pulling power with one wrap of cable on the drum. which makes sence. ever where i read says u need atleast 5 wraps of cable on drum before u make a pull. well each wrap decreases pulling power by 12 percent so if i do my math corectly with 5 wraps of cable on drum u now only have 4221 pounds of pulling power even with a snatch block ran max power with all 80 feet of cable out minus the 5 wraps on the drum u have 8443 pounds of pulling power. let me know if im wrong and toatally confused. THANKS

maybe your getting wraps mixed up with layers? theres X number of wraps of cable on the drum per layer, after each layer then you start to lose pulling power. 5 wraps on the drum for the first layer for safety i assume, so that theres a solid connection with the drum.

yea, it's layers that decrease pulling power. Having the minimum 5 wraps is just for saftey. At that point you should have maximum puling power.

Think of each LAYER as an decrease in GEAR RATIO.

The more layers, the higher the ratio.

its good to hear that these winches change pulling power based on wraps and all that. The one we use on our planes we never have to worry about that cuz we get the same amount of pull no matter how far out the cable is. Of course i cant see the drum to know how many wraps are on it anyways. But its good info for a winch purchase in the future.

Speaking of winches I ordered my XD9000i today.. Elkaholic does the C17 have hydro or electric winches? I know every time I see a MH53 get winched in the front of a C5 I'm impressed.

Its hydraulic. 7500 lb cable pull which can up to 9000 lb cable pull with 4 snatch blocks, and we can easily pull 250,000lbs on a flat surface on pneumatic tires.
