Want to rebuild 22re any advice on parts ect

I want to rebuilt my motor, almost 300 thousand, seem's to still run good, doesnt smoke or burn oil..just no power at all and gas mileage is about 12, with 31 onit and stock gears...its a 1986 4runner...I hear people say once u rebuild them, they never last like stock motors, any ideas why that would be? Also I cant spend a ton on parts, witch is the best rebuild kits for the money, witch wont give out in a year? Any ideas on how to give it a bit more power, I hear a rv cam is the way to go, any negatives to that?

^ x2 I did my rebuild and used engnbldr , tons of info from both Tod & Ted I did 10 over you may need to go bigger see what your machine shop tells you first. If your gonna do it get the head he sells with the oversized valves and either 261 or 268 ( daily driver big tires cam) cam as well. The end results are worth the money you put out , I did my rebuild from info I gained on this site never touched a 22re before in my life and I have a great running 4runner but remember that you are building a 4 cylinder and not a v8 so you may find you have a lack of power after you get done but it is a 4 cylinder.

Red face

This is where it can get a little interesting some machine shops( around Here) will not install any parts but those sold by them. So ask around look for a Machine shop that knows Toyota engines.

Are you good enough to measure the cylinder bore and the crank mains and rod journals and any other needed measurements ??

Then order the correct sizes for your kit. Then put it all together

I would go with Engine builder in a minute I buy all my 22r series engine parts from him.

Like stated this is a 4 cylinder if your looking for a huge gain in horsepower it can get expensive

You might want to think about a swap which opens a whole new area

NO I am not looking for huge gains, it just takes me 20 min to get to 60mph, cant pull my quad trailer past about 20mph up and kind of hill...After about 60mph my motor sounds like its really working to hard...I was also hoping after a fresh motor I could get better gas mileage...Are you good enough to measure the cylinder bore and the crank mains and rod journals and any other needed measurements...I haven't did any of that before but willing to learn....I have rebuilt motorcycles things like that, not a complete rookie but close I guess...
