Starter problems?

I've been having problems with my truck (1990 4wd 22re) every once and a while when I would try to start it it would act like the battery was dead or it had a bad connection but try a few times and it would start. Then one day it acted like the batter was dead again I messed the wires a bit and it finely started. Happens the same day again. So I messed with wires and could not get it started I needed another battery so I bought one thinking that might help. But still would not start. I had to pop the clutch to get it started. Ive never bad a starter go out on me so I don't know what they do when they go out.
Sorry in advance if any of the spelling is wacky because my iPhone is always changeing words around.

it's the starter. Had the same problem. Easy to replace, or if your feeling smart just rebuild yours it's much cheaper. Passenger side of the motor at the bell housing should be two 12mm bolts. Might be 10mm not sure.

yup, that sounds like the classic starter contacts wore out.

Just replaced the contacts in mine! They were $8 each (2 contacts) at the dealer and very easy to do. The whole job took about an hour.

I don't know if napa would have the contact. If they don't then I would have to order them and stuff takes for everrrrrrr to get here. I'll probably just use my other used one.

if you have a starter/alternator rebuild shop around you, try asking them if they will sell you them. In most cases just doing the contacts work, but depending on how long you have been fighting with the starter it can pit out the plunger pretty bad as well.

You can order them below with expedited shipping if needed:

]There is not alternator or starter shop around here. It only acted up for like 3 days.
What's a good replacement starter I was going to use a used one I had laying around but I dug if out and it's pretty beat up. I seen some Bosch starters on eBay for like 60 bucks

Rebuild the one(s) you have, they are the best:

And the contacts will act up then be OK for a while, repeating the acting up more often as they wear out until one day the starter quits.

The first time you pull the starter it is tricky. Figuring out how to get to the two fasteners with the tools you have is the hardest part. But once you have that figured out, the next time, it is fairly straight forward. And on the IFS trucks, about 3' of extensions to move the ratchet up in front of the suspension really helps to break that one bolt loose. On my '85, the first time I did it, it took over an hour, but now can pull it in a few minutes.

Having a mild body lift can also help, I found w/o a body lift, I could either see the bolts on the starter or I could get a socket on them, but not both at the same time. With a 1" body lift, I could both see the head of the bolt and get a socket on it at the same time and that made all the difference in the world.

heh yup took about an hour for me to get Jerry's starter out of his 3vze 4runner. If you have A/C in a 22re it can be tricky too. But if your like me and have no A/C and a carb'd truck it's super simple to get it out.

guess it depends on what you have to compare it to. I just did the full timing set including the radiator and t-stat on a 3.2 liter dodge intrepid every thing and i mean every thing is tough to get to on that car. I guess i have an advantage of a bunch of tools and had my truck for almost 11 years. After awhile you've turned most of the bolts on the darn thing and it just seems easy. I don't know maybe i'm lucky and it was easy for me. Regardless it's a pretty straight forward repair in my opinion.

yeah i think im just going to have to order the contacts and rebuild it. i only have a few days off and i dont think that they will even be here by then so it will probably be a while. when i put the motor back in my truck i put the starter on after words and i dont remember it being hard. i dont remember it being hard to take off ither but i cant really remember. is there any reason why the starter wire should be a constant HOT? when i was takeing the wire off my ratchet touched the frame and it sparked i dont know if i have some kind of wireing problem or what's the deal.

Thanks.

Im kind of confused about what contacts i should get. This web site makes it kind of difficult to figure out. http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/CheapTri...epairVsReplace
I know i should just take my starter off first to see what size i need but like i said i dont really have time.

From what i read any of the three sizes will work but one might be to small one might need triming and the other one was justtttt right said goldy locks. i dont know.
I thought it was kind of interesting what they said about useing copper pipe as contact.
copper pipe makes a pretty good battery terminal too.

The big wire to the starter is constant 12 volts.

Contact usage as noted:
# Most Toyota 4-cyl starters (22RE) in the early '90s use an A-style motor side and a C-style battery side contact
Or you can order the full set of 4 and have one of every possible contact.
