L50 / L52 Input Bearing/seal.

I just purchased a 5 speed either L50 or L52 Transmission for my 1980 4x4 pickup. It appears that the front Input seal is leaking. . . . . My question is can you take off the bearing plate around the main shaft to get to the seal? Or will taking out these 6 bolts cause internal transmission damage? I guess my question is can I take this plate off and replace the seal without any damage?

If I can do this I want to do it now because the transmission is not yet in, bought it today.

Any help would be greatly appreciated Thanks!!!!
