Help me find the right machine shop.
Im rebuilding my 1990 22re in my pickup. So im gonna need to get my block decked and probably bore it .020 just so the cylinders are fresh again. Also I want to try to salvage the crank and cam since in building a DD.
What do I need to find out from my Local machine shops. I dont want some schmuck decking my block and have the pistons stickin out a half inch over the top. Ive been in manufacturing machine shops but not directly for engines. So i do have a little background knowledge, but I just want to make sure some random shop aint gonna give me junk back.
Thanks for all help.
edit:: what services or processes do I need to ask about to ensure that the shop is competent.

You're on the right track already. First, maybe see who the Toyota dealership sends their blocks to when they rebuild an engine. As great and simple as this sounds...I didn't end up feeling comfortable with the shop my local dealership used.
Ask questions. You should get an idea of whether they know Toyotas right away. If they aren't actually rebuilding the engine, then you don't have half as much to worry about. Any competent shop can clean, bore & hone a block and turn a crank, but when it comes to what parts to use on a rebuild, that's when a shop that knows Toyotas really comes in handy.
I think that just by asking a couple simple questions, even just how much they charge and what they think it will need, and you'll get an idea of if they are a bunch of shaved monkeys, or actual competent, nice, trustworthy people

I called four or five places and the next to cheapest sounded most competent. Mcgumgills Engine Performance in Muncie. For $450 labor they'll do the block, crank and heads. He said $450 for parts that included everything. So $900 total, unless I get my parts from engnbldr.com I can save about $50 or $75.
