Easiest way to diagnose a check engine light?
So someone used my truck and the check engine light came on...I'm not sure if there's anything they did to cause a problem or it would have happened anyway. I kinda need to figure it out because I need to take my truck on a long trip soon. I took it for a short drive and couldn't detect any symptoms. I know the units they let you use at autozone won't work for 96 and older vehicles. Is this something a dealership might check for free?

use a paper clip and jump TE1 and E1 terminals under the hood in the diagnostic port.

Thanks guys, so I did the paper clip jump thing, the light flashes twice, pauses, then flashes 7 times, then long pause, and repeat. I don't see on that link if it tells which code means what?

It's strange, I found that after I counted the first time and realized it didn't exist. I assumed maybe it was 26 and I had just counted an extra. But I went out and counted again and I'm positive it's 2 and then 7. *shrug*

Could be time to replace the ECU.
Or just ingore it, for now, if it seems to be running fine. Could be just a harmless "glitch". I've had a similarly mysterious code 11 dilemna going on 4 years now. Long story... but there did used to be a code 11 for this engine(code 11 = momentary power loss to the ECU). Pre-90, so only on the 88 and 89(I think). What that damn code actually means(as in what's really happening), and/or how to alleviate it, evades me to this day. So, the check engine light means nothing to me now, because it's on more often than it's not. That's unless I can tell something isn't right by how it's running. Then I'll check the ECU for another code(s).
Good luck.
