Clutch installation!!!
ok i ordered my marlin clutch the other night. I just have a few questions 1st before installation. 1. will me and my dad be able to manually lift the transmission down from the truck or do we need a jack? 2. Am i gonna run into anything thats not found in your average straight drive tranny? Im just tryin to get it figured out before i get it tore down, then start scratchin my head. haha thanks for the help

Well you could weld a platform to a normal jack that lifts up high enough to the tranny...
I mean you could get a few strong guys under there and maybe try it. I know that me and my dad had some issues carrying around the tranny out of my 81.

yeah have at LEAST two floor jacks if you'r going to try it, lol
one at the front, and one at the rear, and just unbolt the cross member at the fram on each side, and stick some jack stands on each side to stabilize it
it's a major PITA, I'm going to come right out and tell you, lol, but it's only about a couple hours work

Honestly you could do it without a jack with 2 people and it would be easier also if you removed the transfer case first. Taking it out though is going to be the easy part compared to putting it back in as you don't need to line up the input shaft.

Doesn't HF have a mount for that? Thought they did.
I pulled my motor, yesterday("Trying to make a decision" thread), ....the two PITA bellhousing bolts that I've heard of were quite simple, with an angled 17mm closed/open end wrench of decent length. Simply used a cheater over the open end with my hand on the closed end, over the nut to keep it on.....and "POP" she went on the first try. I also did a hungarian Loop knot, that is holding the tranny up right now.(I preferred that choice because it will allow me to easily ease it down if i have to onto a floor dolly...Just use REALLY good rope and KNOW THAT YOU KNOW how to do knots). Just a thought.

Ive done this by myself a few times. The way I do it is with a engine hoist and a 4 foot strap and one ratchet strap. Just take the shifter boot off and all that, position the hoist arm into the cab and wrap the strap around then up through the hole in the trans tunnel and attach to hoist. Jack it up so there is pressure holding it up. I have dual cases so I put the ratchet strap at the back under the flange cuz its a bit longer/heavier. Unbolt it all then slide if off the output then you can lower it with control of the hoist. A W56 5 spd is fairly light and you could get it in and out with 2 guys, ive seen a tranny dropped and reinstalled on the trail before . And just remember when reinstalling, never suck it up with the bolts, the bell housing should slide right up to the engine, so if its not going in something is wrong, could just be the angle of the tranny but could be a the clutch disc or something expensive.

One thing you have to be very careful***
Once the trans is out of the splines the whole thing is going to twist to the right side of the truck Because of the shape of the transfer case . If your not using a trans Jack or home made plate bolted to the Trans.
Make sure you have the truck high enough ,
I get all the bell housing bolts from the bottom with the engine down all the way i think I also loosen the Motor mount bolts.
It is much easier for me to remove the sway bar some people leave it on.

I just laid two 4X4 treated posts across my front doors (with the windows down of course) and took out the shifter and Boot. I then put a ratchet strap through the hole to connect the tranny to my wood hoist and used a floor jack to support it while I slowly let it down. I had to slightly ange the wood to account for the steering wheel. Bewteen the two it was very easy.

I made a shadetree tranny jack by welding some pieces of scrap metal to my floor jack so that it cradled the tranny, then I used some straps to strap the tranny to the floor jack contraption. Worked like a champ, then when I was done, I just used a cutting wheel to cut the pieces of scrap metal off of my jack.

I did it by myself with a floor jack and transmision adapter from harbor freight tools and it still wanted to turn sideways because of the transfer case. with a jack and some one to help it will be alright.

replace your throwout bearing and pilot bearing while you're in there. also might consider doing a rear main seal. Unless your truck is low mileage. I've always done the tranny by myself. Ratchet straps through the shifter holes to reinstall it and a jack to take it out. You will probably have to shake the out of it to get it to come loose.
