No lift and Toyota shafts. Others blow up the crapo-zone ones from time to time.

I'm not sure if there is a corelation or not, but I've had great success. Never lost a shaft to anything other than lack of maintenence (let a joint run dry from a torn boot. When it broke, I looked in there, and there was more dirt then grease. Personally I don't count that one, but thats up for interpretation I guess. However, that was before duals).

The IFS is a system like anything else, and has its strengths and weaknesses like everything else. I can see why mud would cause you all sorts of problems, as from what I've seen, mud is not something that can be crawled.

Also, wheeling in rocks and rock racing are very different animals. The big dollar trucks with the strongest parts on the market, that are usually seen in the vids are hammering down.

I very rarely see anything above 1000-1200 RPM's when I'm driving over obstacles, even larger stuff:

And a vid of the same obstacle, which, while clearly shows how poorly I can select a line sometimes, also is representative of my normal throttle usage and speed.

I knew you weren't crawling through the mud.

My point was just that its more likely that you would break in the mud, because in order to get through mud, people have to gas it!

My point was that I think it'd be more likely that people would break shafts in the mud than in the rocks. With dual cases and dual lockers, my lines through the rocks are usually very slow and very controlled. I don't drive in my ever, but I've seen videos of those who do, and they are always on the throttle hard.

I've noticed that a lot more people in the south east and north west have issues with IFS more so than those of us in the arid west.

i see what you are saying, but i really dont agree that rocks are easier on parts than mud. sure heavier throttle is used in the mud because there is next to no traction.... its hard to break something when not given traction.... that being said, rocks are much more fun!

Just wondering is it better to put 2.28 in the front or the 4.7 in the front and the 2.28 in the back?

Oh and has anyone had a auto transmission with double cases. Any pro or cons? I'm debating on switching the 1uz from the stock auto transmission to the stock 4Runner 5spd transmission. It's exspensive. So just weighing the pros and cons of both.

Put the 2.28 in the front and the 4.7 in the rear. It's a stronger set up, and this way gives you better gearing options.

Most people I've seen with an auto either run a single 4.7 case or two stock 2.28 dual cases. Something about the torque converter makes the gearing feel way lower than it actually is. You can search for more info on that and find a bunch of stuff. Check out Dirtco's 4runner build, he's running an auto and a single 4.7 case.

Looking back at this and I found I typed this incorrectly so as to not confuse anyone. I know people do use autos in front of double cases. It was more how do you like them? Anything you would have done differently.

And I will check out his build thread thanks.
