I understand you can buy do it yourself kits from Marlin, Inchworm, Aisin, and probably bunches of others but can you take 2 transfer cses say from a junkyard and make your own double case. Fill it with whatever gears you choose. The reason I ask. Is I have a 90 4Runner 4x4 and it has the stock chain driven transfer case. I want the gear driven case cause they are more reliable and cheaper to make into a double case. Difference is 600 bucks! That got me thinking... Would I need an adapter plate that the above mentioned companies may offer? Any links or info would be greatly apreciated. This will eventually be behind a Lexus 1uz V8 engine and I will be gettign the prerunner adapter from teh auto trans. to the tranfer case. If that info was needed. Thanks guys

It doesn`t have to be carburated, all transfer cases from 84-88 are geared, EFI included.

 

You still need the adapter .

you need the adapter and two gear driven cases...preferably top shifts, but you can get kits from inchworn, marlin, trail-gear to convert a forward shift to top shift.

Aisin does not make an Dual case adapter, you might be thinking Advance Adapters.

You will need:
-2 transfer cases, usually Top shift
-a Transfer case adapter-21 spline or 23 spline (stronger)
-a dual case crossmember
-shorten rear driveshaft and lengthen rear shaft
-cut a hole in the tunnel floor for the second TC lever

Marlin has an adapter to put a gear drive reduction box in front of a chain drive (preTaco) case now.

All the Tacoma adapters go to chain drive cases IIRC.

 

Ok. Yes I can buy the double case. But I was wondering if I can make one from the transfer cases I see on CL and the junkyards. Yes Marlin sells the kit with gears in front of the chain driven case but it costs 1,400 dollars. I'm just trying to find spots where I can save more money. If I can't I will find me a gear driven case and buy a marlin kit and make it a double case. And that would be cheaper then the chain driven double case.

 

Usually the year range is 79-95, but there were years of chain driven in there. 85 has chain driven. Anything behind the autos were chain driven.

MC10 adapter using your existing chain drive case is cheaper than buying the adapters and 2 gear drive cases when I was pricing mine.

I ended up finding a total setup with gear drive cases, 4.7, crossmember, twinsticks, adapters - everything - for cheaper than the adapters were gonna cost me so I went that route.

In terms of on-road drivability, the chain drive cases are a significant leap over the gear drive.

Hayes - sorry I should have been more specific, it's for the V6 chain drive case.

 

I found a guy with a front axle which I was looking for and then he is throwing in a gear driven case ad a w56 transmission for 250. So going that route thanks guys

The 5.o gears I haven't heard of. He said that most of the parts are from trail gear and advanced adapters. Anyone know anything about this kind of set up? Yeah or no???

 

You are planning on puttin this on an ifs truck?? locked??

 

It's going to be solid axle, with 5.29s ARB locked. With the 1uz powering it all. Just gathering parts for this build. Looking for good deals. And this looks to be a good deal if It will work for my set up. Thanks for the response RunnerBoyy

 

All that stuff minus the lexus motor goes great in a locked IFS truck. Dual cases are my second favorite mod right behind the dual ARB's.

 

How are you not grenading shafts?? i couldnt keep ifs shafts in my truck only being locked in the mud, especially dualls on the rocks???

 

But should work fine in a Solid axle truck right?
