Exclamation Best preformance/fuel economy upgrades?

I just got an 88 single cab 4x4 pick up with a v6 and a 5 spd manual tranny with 286k miles on it and everything runs beautifully, picked it up for $2,000 on Monday. Been driving it around for a few days and have fallen in love with it. Everything is pretty stock other than it is sitting on 31's right now. I already plan on adding an electronic cooling fan ran by a toggle switch and a cold air intake, but what else could I do to get a bit more HP and possibly some more MPG? Will get a pic up as soon as I can shrink it down a bit.

Leave it stock and keep you're right foot out of it.

any small mods aint gonna help a whole lot so you can sacrifice some HP for gas milege by swappin in a 22R or RE, but your probably not plannin on doing that much work so just do what wabbit said

I'm willing to sacrifice some fuel economy. Not too fond on sacrificing HP. Right now I'm gettin around 20 Mpg highway and 16 city. Rough estimate, haven't filled it completely yet. I put it in neutral and coast as much as i can. I use to drive a 1ton dodge camper van and was gettin an even 9 Mpg no matter what, so I'm not one to waste gas by being a leadfoot. Only time I floor it is when im wheelin.

Keep as much weight out of the rig as possible. Power to weight ratio is EVERYTHING when talking about performance.

Make sure the engine can breath! With in reason a free flowing air filter and better exhaust will help but do realize that the factory does a pretty dang good job of it themselves so its not going to be a night and day difference.

As far a s spark plugs like mentioned above I am kinda of a opposite frame of mind when it comes to them. I like using good quality standard type plugs but change them more often. Take a NGK K16TR-11 for example, they are relatively cheap but dual ground. And changing them twice a year makes sure you always have fresh Anti Seize on the threads so you never have to core a head after stripping the threads.

Once the fuel or air is burned up no amount of spark is going to burn anything.

Other things that might help the butt dyno see a change is switching transmission and gear/axle fluid to synthetic. Making it easier to put the power down makes a difference.
Manual hubs up front will help reduce LOTS of drag too.

Don`t swap out the stock fan for an electric fan, you won`t get that much of a performance gain, and if you forget to turn it on your 3.slow will over heat and blow a head gasket.

IF you have ADD, then swapping in manual hubs is a big gain in mileage.
